They offered no other information on Mikita’s condition other than noting that he may suffer from Lewy body dementia. Mikita, 74, played his entire 22-season career for the Chicago Blackhawks from 1958 to 1980 and was on the Blackhawks team with Bobby Hull that won the Stanley Cup in 1961. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in games played, points and assists and is second in goals. Mikita was inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983 and has been a Blackhawks team ambassador since 2007. Mikita was at a ceremony in 2011 when the Blackhawks unveiled bronze statues of him and Hull outside the United Center. In 1980, Mikita’s No. 21 was the first ever retired by the Blackhawks. “We are thinking of Stan and his family at this difficult time and wish him well,” the team said in a statement. Lewy body dementia is a progressive disease that causes problems with thinking, movement, behavior and mood. It’s associated with abnormal protein deposits in the brain called Lewy bodies. There’s no known cure, but people can live with the disease for a number of years. How quickly symptoms develop varies from person to person. source: http://tristate-media.com/drr/nhl-blackhawks-hall-of-famer-stan-mikita-has-brain-disorder/article_36d3dfdc-aa6c-11e4-9c3a-c744cfe7588d.html

Blackhawks-Sharks Preview – Yahoo Sports

San Jose did not fare well in its only other meeting with the Blackhawks this season, a 5-2 thumping in Chicago on Nov. 9 less than 24 hours after a 5-3 victory over the Stars in Dallas at the start of a seven-game road trip. “We were flat and it was on a back-to-back and they took it to us that game,” forward Logan Couture said Friday. Now the situation is reversed with Chicago having played Friday night in Anaheim and the Sharks are playing the sixth of seven straight at home. “Hopefully we can take advantage of them, get on them early,” Couture said Friday. While the Sharks have fared well over the past few seasons against the NHL’s stronger teams, their games against the Blackhawks have not fit that pattern as Chicago has won eight of the previous 12 meetings between the teams and picked up a point in two of the four losses. The Sharks are 6-1-1 this season against the other California teams, and Couture noted that they could face Los Angeles or Anaheim in the first round of the playoffs so there’s added incentive. With the Blackhawks in the Central Division, an early playoff showdown is possible but far less likely. “We know they’re one of the best teams in the league and if we do face them, hopefully it’s in the conference finals. It’s a challenge playing against those guys, they’ve got so muck skill up front, great defensemen, and their goaltender plays well. source: http://www.contracostatimes.com/breaking-news/ci_27429692/sharks-face-chicago-blackhawks-little-payback-mind

Blackhawks-Ducks Preview – Yahoo Sports

The Blackhawks are 1-3-2 in their last six visits to San Jose. Chicago (31-16-2) opened a three-game stretch in California with Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to Los Angeles before bouncing back to beat the Ducks 4-1 on Friday. Patrick Kane stayed hot with two goals and an assist while Patrick Sharp assisted on all four goals, matching a career high. Duncan Keith also scored to become the fifth defenseman in Blackhawks history to reach 400 points. Chicago has outscored foes 15-8 in winning three of four. “They’re the best team in the NHL this year, (but) we knew they were coming off a back-to-back games and three in four nights,” said Kane, who is second in the league with 56 points. “We played a perfect road game. It was a fun game.” Kane and Sharp have combined for six goals and 12 assists over the last five games. Kane has scored 14 of his 25 goals in the third period. “Kaner has had the hot stick all season long,” Sharp said. “I feel comfortable with him, and we’ve had a good stretch of games.” The Blackhawks are expected to turn to Antti Raanta in goal after Corey Crawford made 21 saves Friday. Raanta hasn’t started since stopping 35 shots in a 6-1 win over Arizona on Jan. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-sharks-preview-171042944–nhl.html

NHL: Niemi leads Sharks to 2-0 victory over Blackhawks – Daily Republican Register: Daily Republican Register

“Nemo made the first save, it was dribbling in. He made the second save,” coach Todd McLellan said. “We flew by the situation, which we shouldn’t have, so we had to make the third and maybe even the fourth save. It could have been the turning point, it really could have, giving up a short-handed goal at that point. Nemo was there for us.” Toews had the puck again for another shot, but the referees blew the play dead on a quick whistle. “I wasn’t too happy with that,” Toews said. “He thought it was frozen. It is what it is. We should have scored on the first rush.” After Raanta made key stops on Barclay Goodrow and Matt Nieto early in the third to keep the deficit at one goal, Niemi responded again with a tough save against Saad. “It was one of those games where you thought you felt something was going to come eventually and it didn’t happen,” Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. “I think we are on the right track here.” NOTES: Niemi had two shutouts against the Blackhawks, beating them 1-0 on Nov. 23, 2011. source: http://tristate-media.com/drr/nhl-niemi-leads-sharks-to—victory-over-blackhawks/article_bca6a0dc-aa66-11e4-a1eb-c711032b17b7.html

Sharks face Chicago Blackhawks with a little payback in mind – ContraCostaTimes.com

“Five goals? I don’t know what happened to us. … We didn’t play very good in front of Bryzgalov.” The Ducks are expected to go back to Andersen, who is a league-best 17-2-1 with a 2.09 goals-against average since Dec. 1. His only appearance against Chicago came in the Nov. 28 defeat, during which he stopped 34 of 37 shots opposite Corey Crawford. Crawford has dropped three of his last four starts behind a 3.49 GAA. He’s given up a combined three goals during a personal three-game winning streak against the Ducks, though. Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews has just four points over a nine-game stretch in the series. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-ducks-preview-073045035–nhl.html
