The fourth-line forward nearly smacked a Chicago player in the head with his stick during a giddy celebration, one that provided the spark necessary to wake the Penguins from a weeklong swoon. Downie tied it at 12:22 of the second, stuffing a rebound past a sprawled Crawford for his first goal since Jan. 2. That set up an electric back-and-forth third period that played in stark contrast to Pittsburgh’s penalty-filled meeting with the Flyers the night before. “When we’ve been short players, really short players we seem to be able to pick it up,” coach Mike Johnston said. “We need to be able to do that when we have everybody in the lineup. … Our depth really stepped it up.” NOTES: The Penguins host Winnipeg next Tuesday but will play 21 of their final 36 games on the road. … The Blackhawks face a difficult six-game trip after the break, starting next Wednesday at Los Angeles. … source: http://tristate-media.com/drr/nhl-blackhawks-beat-short-handed-penguins-in-shootout/article_74c82452-a2cd-11e4-9a3e-87f2246b53c6.html

Toews is the captain of one all-star team. Kane is the alternate captain of the other. Theyre reportedly going to play in another Stadium Series game next season. They will have played in four stadium games at that point again, more than any other team. Not every team would want to do all that. Take the Los Angeles Kings , who have won two Stanley Cups in the salary-cap era, same as the Blackhawks, but dont have the same profile. They have two all-stars here. They will play in their second stadium game in February. Wed rather be sitting behind the Blackhawks, giving them all the attention, and then when the playoffs come around and we face them, then thats our opportunity to beat them, said Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. As players, we dont mind that. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-soar-into-all-star-game-as-nhl-s-go-to-glamour-team-231754648-nhl.html

It was looking pretty good for us with that 3-2 lead late in the third, but we found a way to blow it.” The Kings played their first regular-season game since December 2011 without $69 million center Mike Richards, who was waived on Monday and demoted to the AHL on Tuesday after managing just five goals in the first 47 games. Perhaps not coincidentally, Los Angeles got a monster performance from Carter, Richards’ longtime teammate in Philadelphia and again in Los Angeles. Carter had just his second multigoal game of the season, along with numerous near-misses and big plays. Carter scored his first goal while skating backward after stickhandling adroitly through traffic. He tied it again in the second period after winning a puck battle with Toews and wiring a shot over prone defenseman Brent Seabrook. Although the clubs played a penalty-free third period, the Blackhawks lamented a few borderline calls that weren’t made. “I think (the officials) were kind of maybe playing catch-up after we got a few power plays,” Kane said. “I think we may have sat back a little bit and waited for (the Kings) to come at us. And usually when we do that, bad things happen, as you could see.” NOTES: Richards’ streak of 224 consecutive games played for the Kings ended. He is making $7 million this season and is under contract until 2020. … The Kings open their annual Grammys road trip on Saturday, a five-game stretch beginning in Boston. source: http://tristate-media.com/drr/nhl-toffoli-muzzin-score-late-la-kings-rally-past-chicago/article_78350414-a789-11e4-978b-cb085ec07d66.html
