Blackhawks soar into All-Star Game as NHL’s go-to glamour team – Yahoo Sports

After a 49-year drought, Chicago has won two Stanley Cups in the past five seasons. (USA Today)

“Even if things aren’t going so well, we’re good at taking responsibility for it and not dragging our feet around and dwelling on what we’re not doing or what’s not going our way,” Toews said. “We just find ways that we can make things better, and we showed an example of that in the last two games.” David Rundblad and Marian Hossa scored in regulation for Chicago. Corey Crawford made 33 saves and held Pittsburgh’s David Perron and Sidney Crosby in check in the shootout. “It was a tough game,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “You find when you win these types of games, it makes you a good team.” Zach Sill scored his first NHL goal and Steve Downie added his eighth of the season for the Penguins. Fleury stopped 24 shots but Pittsburgh hobbled into the break with a fourth straight loss, among them a bruising overtime defeat in Philadelphia on Tuesday that included injuries to stars Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin. Letang was held out as a precaution following a frightening collision with Philadelphia’s Zac Rinaldo. Malkin skated during warm-ups on Wednesday before telling trainers he couldn’t play due to an undisclosed issue. Malkin’s status for All-Star weekend is uncertain. The absence of two vital parts of Pittsburgh’s core took some of the punch out of the game both teams hope is a Stanley Cup preview, though neither has looked like a top-flight contender the last month. source: http://tristate-media.com/drr/nhl-blackhawks-beat-short-handed-penguins-in-shootout/article_74c82452-a2cd-11e4-9a3e-87f2246b53c6.html

NHL All-Star Game scoring record set in Columbus with 29 goals | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports

Thats a lot of stuff that theyre dealing with. It probably does take a toll on you after a while. The Blackhawks embrace it. I dont really look at it like any of thats work, Keith said. Ive been on the other side of the ledger where theres been no attention and been nothing. Its easy to forget now, but Blackhawks were one of the worst teams and worst-marketed teams in the NHL not long ago. As recently as 2006-07, they had so little fan support that they ranked second-to-last in attendance, averaging only 12,727 at the United Center. They couldnt fill their arena, let alone stadiums and all-star ballot boxes. They drafted Kane first overall in June 2007. He wasnt in the lineup for a preseason game a few months later, so he sat in the stands with his family and a few thousand loyal customers. No one recognized the No. 1 pick. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-soar-into-all-star-game-as-nhl-s-go-to-glamour-team-231754648-nhl.html

The goals were plentiful, the skating was casual and the crowd only popped for the hometown heroes. So basically it was the NHL All-Star Game. The first period saw a combined eight goals, four by each team. Ryan Johansen (Foligno) had two of them, while Roberto Luongo (Toews) made a few quality glove saves. Radim Vrbata (Foligno) opened the scoring at 3:09 of the first period with his first all-star goal. The second period featured 11 goals, an All-Star Game record and a metric ton of sarcasm. Team Foligno goalie Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins tied an ignominious record in giving up seven goals in a period. That tied Mike Vernons 1990 record for the Campbell Conference. The partisan Columbus crowd, which considers the Penguins arch rivals, began mockingly cheering his routine saves. Team Toews received goals from Ryan Suter, Tyler Seguin, Rick Nash, Filip Forsberg, two from Tavares and one from Jakub Voracek. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-all-star-game-scoring-record-set-in-columbus-with-29-goals-011226205.html
