Blackhawks soar into All-Star Game as NHL’s go-to glamour team – Yahoo Sports

After a 49-year drought, Chicago has won two Stanley Cups in the past five seasons. (USA Today)

Malkin skated during warm-ups on Wednesday before telling trainers he couldn’t play due to an undisclosed issue. Malkin’s status for All-Star weekend is uncertain. The absence of two vital parts of Pittsburgh’s core took some of the punch out of the game both teams hope is a Stanley Cup preview, though neither has looked like a top-flight contender the last month. Pittsburgh has cooled to fall just off the pace of the first-place New York Islanders in the crowded Metropolitan Division. Chicago trails surprising Nashville and steady St. Louis in the Central. Rundblad gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead 6:56 in. The defenseman took advantage of a dominant shift by the top line of Hossa, Toews and Brandon Saad. The trio kept the puck buried in Pittsburgh’s zone for more than a minute, with Rundblad taking a feed from Hossa at the point and sending a shot past a well-screened Fleury for his fourth goal. Hossa doubled Chicago’s lead early in the second with his 10th goal, a wrist shot from just inside the left circle that Fleury barely saw through the sea of bodies. Yet just when it appeared the Penguins were ready to collapse, they responded behind some unlikely contributors. source: http://tristate-media.com/drr/nhl-blackhawks-beat-short-handed-penguins-in-shootout/article_74c82452-a2cd-11e4-9a3e-87f2246b53c6.html

The goals were plentiful, the skating was casual and the crowd only popped for the hometown heroes. So basically it was the NHL All-Star Game. The first period saw a combined eight goals, four by each team. Ryan Johansen (Foligno) had two of them, while Roberto Luongo (Toews) made a few quality glove saves. Radim Vrbata (Foligno) opened the scoring at 3:09 of the first period with his first all-star goal. The second period featured 11 goals, an All-Star Game record and a metric ton of sarcasm. Team Foligno goalie Marc-Andre Fleury of the Pittsburgh Penguins tied an ignominious record in giving up seven goals in a period. That tied Mike Vernons 1990 record for the Campbell Conference. The partisan Columbus crowd, which considers the Penguins arch rivals, began mockingly cheering his routine saves. Team Toews received goals from Ryan Suter, Tyler Seguin, Rick Nash, Filip Forsberg, two from Tavares and one from Jakub Voracek. The third period was just as porous, as the goals kept piling up at a record pace. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-all-star-game-scoring-record-set-in-columbus-with-29-goals-011226205.html

That’s why Alex Ovechkin, perhaps the best pure scorer in the world, lasted until the third-to-last pick as he lobbied to get a new car. He fell one pick short of that “award.” His selection did help finish a late surge by Team Foligno, which seemed to be trailing a bit behind Team Toews for most of the draft. The home team also features a top defense pair of Drew Doughty and Duncan Keith, which is perfect for the wide-open style of play in the All-Star Game. Another great moment from the draft was the first trade in the spectacle’s history. Team Toews sent Phil Kessel to the opposite side in exchange for Tyler Seguin. The captain then poked fun at recent talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs star being uncoachable, as noted by Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com: Zing ! Toews says Kessel is “one of the more coachable players out there.” Pierre LeBrun (@Real_ESPNLeBrun) January 24, 2015 Ultimately, when the dust settled after the draft, the teams were pretty evenly matched. Team Toews may hold a slight edge up front, but it’s offset by marginally strong defense and goaltending on Team Foligno. Of course, there won’t be a ton of defensive effort on game day. At least not until the third period. Ken Campbell of The Hockey News broke down the numbers following the selections. He found Toews’ side was more accomplished with 11 Olympic golds and 10 Stanley Cups. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2340937-nhl-all-star-game-2015-rosters-analyzing-team-foligno-vs-team-toews-after-draft

(CT) but sat through about an hours delay. No part of them wished they were headed to Cabo or Cancun for vacation thanks to, say, a sudden lower-body injury instead of Columbus for the NHL All-Star Game? Aw, come on, Toews said as he sat at a microphone for Media Day not long after he landed. You want me to answer that straight up? View gallery . Toews and the ‘Hawks have played in three outdoor games, with another one reportedly in the works. (USA Today) He smiled. Im kidding, he said. OK, maybe part of them did wish they were somewhere warm. But Toews was kidding for the most part.
