Blackhawks soar into All-Star Game as NHL’s go-to glamour team – Yahoo Sports

After a 49-year drought, Chicago has won two Stanley Cups in the past five seasons. (USA Today)

Corey Crawford made 33 saves and held Pittsburgh’s David Perron and Sidney Crosby in check in the shootout. “It was a tough game,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. “You find when you win these types of games, it makes you a good team.” Zach Sill scored his first NHL goal and Steve Downie added his eighth of the season for the Penguins. Fleury stopped 24 shots but Pittsburgh hobbled into the break with a fourth straight loss, among them a bruising overtime defeat in Philadelphia on Tuesday that included injuries to stars Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin. Letang was held out as a precaution following a frightening collision with Philadelphia’s Zac Rinaldo. Malkin skated during warm-ups on Wednesday before telling trainers he couldn’t play due to an undisclosed issue. Malkin’s status for All-Star weekend is uncertain. The absence of two vital parts of Pittsburgh’s core took some of the punch out of the game both teams hope is a Stanley Cup preview, though neither has looked like a top-flight contender the last month. Pittsburgh has cooled to fall just off the pace of the first-place New York Islanders in the crowded Metropolitan Division. Chicago trails surprising Nashville and steady St. Louis in the Central. He fell one pick short of that “award.” His selection did help finish a late surge by Team Foligno, which seemed to be trailing a bit behind Team Toews for most of the draft. The home team also features a top defense pair of Drew Doughty and Duncan Keith, which is perfect for the wide-open style of play in the All-Star Game. Another great moment from the draft was the first trade in the spectacle’s history. Team Toews sent Phil Kessel to the opposite side in exchange for Tyler Seguin. The captain then poked fun at recent talk about the Toronto Maple Leafs star being uncoachable, as noted by Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com: Zing ! Toews says Kessel is “one of the more coachable players out there.” Pierre LeBrun (@Real_ESPNLeBrun) January 24, 2015 Ultimately, when the dust settled after the draft, the teams were pretty evenly matched. Team Toews may hold a slight edge up front, but it’s offset by marginally strong defense and goaltending on Team Foligno. Of course, there won’t be a ton of defensive effort on game day. At least not until the third period. Ken Campbell of The Hockey News broke down the numbers following the selections. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2340937-nhl-all-star-game-2015-rosters-analyzing-team-foligno-vs-team-toews-after-draft

NHL All-Star Game 2015 Rosters: Analyzing Team Foligno vs Team Toews After Draft | Bleacher Report

Seriously. The Blackhawks have become the NHLs go-to glamour team. They hosted the second Winter Classic in 2009. They hosted a Stadium Series game last season. They had cameras follow them around for an all-access TV series in December and played in another Winter Classic on New Years Day. Now they have five players in this All-Star Game, more than any other team. Toews is the captain of one all-star team. Kane is the alternate captain of the other. Theyre reportedly going to play in another Stadium Series game next season. They will have played in four stadium games at that point again, more than any other team. Not every team would want to do all that. Take the Los Angeles Kings , who have won two Stanley Cups in the salary-cap era, same as the Blackhawks, but dont have the same profile. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-soar-into-all-star-game-as-nhl-s-go-to-glamour-team-231754648-nhl.html

Hossa Moves into 50th Place on NHL’s All-Time Goals List | Bleacher Report

Puskar/Associated Press 1 Comment Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa scored the 474th goal of his career during Wednesday’s 3-2 shootout win over the Pittsburgh Penguins to move into sole possession of 50th place on the NHL ‘s all-time goals list, per Sportsnet Stats . The 36-year-old winger reached the milestone just two minutes, 41 seconds into the second period, when his wrist shot from inside the left circle slipped through a crowd of bodies to beat Penguins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. The power-play goal gave Chicago a 2-0 lead, with assists credited to Brent Seabrook and Brandon Saad. Pittsburgh tied the game with a pair of goals later in the same period, but Chicago came out on top in the shootout, thanks to conversions from forwards Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. In addition to breaking a tie with Denis Savard and Alexander Mogilny for 50th on the all-time goals list , Hossa’s second-period goal was his 10th of the season, giving him a 16th consecutive campaign with double-digit goals. The Czechoslovakian winger only failed to reach double-digit goals in his rookie season of 1997-98, when he made just seven appearances for the Ottawa Senators. He’s recorded at least 15 goals in each subsequent season, and he’ll likely reach that total again by the end of this year. While still going strong for his age, Hossa is on pace for a modest 17 goals, despite playing in each of Chicago’s first 47 games. He has never scored fewer than 25 goals when playing more than 60 games in a season, but it appears the impressive streak may come to an end, if he stays healthy. For now, Hossa will enjoy some time off over the All-Star break before preparing for a run at the third Stanley Cup of his career. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2339376-hossa-moves-into-50th-place-on-nhls-all-time-goals-list
