Blackhawks beat short-handed Penguins in shootout 3-2 – Yahoo Sports

The absence of two vital parts of Pittsburgh’s core took some of the punch out of the game both teams hope is a Stanley Cup preview, though neither has looked like a top-flight contender the last month. Chicago trails surprising Nashville and steady St. Louis in the Central. Rundblad gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead 6:56 in. The defenseman took advantage of a dominant shift by the top line of Hossa, Toews and Brandon Saad. The trio kept the puck buried in Pittsburgh’s zone for more than a minute, with Rundblad taking a feed from Hossa at the point and sending a shot past a well-screened Fleury for his fourth goal. Hossa doubled Chicago’s lead early in the second with his 10th goal, a wrist shot from just inside the left circle that Fleury barely saw through the sea of bodies. Yet just when it appeared the Penguins were ready to collapse, they responded behind some unlikely contributors. Sill went 47 games before recording the first point of his career with an assist against Minnesota last week. He didn’t wait nearly as long to earn his second, sending a wrist shot from the slot over Crawford’s glove 5:21 into the second. The fourth-line forward nearly smacked a Chicago player in the head with his stick during a giddy celebration, one that provided the spark necessary to wake the Penguins from a weeklong swoon. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-beat-short-handed-penguins-shootout-3-2-040834267–nhl.html

NHL: Eakin helps Dallas Stars beat Chicago Blackhawks 6-3 – Daily Republican Register: Daily Republican Register

“It’s just coming together as a team, playing good team defense and getting contribution from everyone.” Patrick Kane scored his 21st goal for Chicago, and Corey Crawford finished with 28 stops. “You’re going to have your moments across the season,” Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews said. “We’re not going to overreact and make a huge deal or panic about anything. The same way we don’t get overconfident when things are going our way.” The Blackhawks trailed 2-1 before they turned a strange play by Dallas defenseman Jordie Benn into the tying score. Benn was sent off for interference after he skated up to Marian Hossa from behind and flipped the forward’s stick out of his hands, all the way to the protective netting behind the Dallas net. Saad scored on the resulting power play, tipping home a rebound after a long shot for Sharp. After Fiddler scored on his own rebound in the final minute of the first, Saad tied it again when he spun around and flung the puck past Lehtonen for his 15th goal at 7:13 of the second. NHL Recap – Chicago Blackhawks at Pittsburgh Penguins – Jan 21, 2015 – CBSSports.com

Despite filling the penalty box, Pittsburgh failed to convert on all six power plays as it lost a third straight game – one shy of its season high set from Dec. 22-29. “With that many opportunities and the skill we have, we should make them pay for that,” captain Sidney Crosby said. Crosby has 13 points in eight games, but didn’t get any for just the second time over that stretch Tuesday. The star center may benefit from a return home, where he has nine points in five games and scored twice in a 4-1 win over Chicago on March 30. Evgeni Malkin missed that matchup with a foot injury, but he has six points in five career meetings with the Blackhawks. The center, who has 10 points in his last eight games, will join Crosby and goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury at Sunday’s All-Star game in Columbus. Chicago is expected to have five players on the ice Sunday, including captain Jonathan Toews, who will fill the same role on one of the All-Star teams. He’s riding a season-high six-game point streak, totaling eight while also netting his first goal of that stretch Tuesday to end an 11-game drought. Toews has six goals and two assists in six games against the Penguins, but didn’t have any points March 30 while Kane was out with a lower-body injury. Kane – another Blackhawks All-Star – enters this one with a team highs of 22 goals and 51 points, collecting nine in the past six games. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-penguins-preview-160326964–nhl.html
