Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons, Chicago Blackhawks leading All-Star vote | FOX Sports

Girgensons leads Buffalo (13-18-3) with nine goals and is second with 18 points. That puts him well off the league-leading pace. Dallas center Tyler Seguin is first with 25 goals, while Philadelphia’s Jakub Voracek tops the points list with 44. Sabres coach Ted Nolan said Girgensons has nothing to be ashamed of. “I wouldn’t be embarrassed at all,” Nolan said. “The whole nation’s cheering for him, which is great to see. So he should feel a lot of pride.” Nolan knows plenty about Girgensons and Latvia. He spent the previous four years coaching Latvia’s national team, which included Girgensons. FOX SPORTS DAILY SUBSCRIBE “He’s come a tremendous long way in a very short period of time,” Nolan said. In an email, Latvian Ice Hockey Federation media manager Maris Gorbunovs wrote the support Latvians have shown Girgensons has been spontaneous, and a reflection of their passion for hockey and a native son. “Canada and USA has many NHL players but Latvia at the moment has only one,” Gorbunovs wrote. source: http://www.foxsports.com/nhl/story/buffalo-sabres-chicago-blackhawks-all-star-vote-lead-zemgus-girgensons-jonathan-toews-patrick-kane-122314

NHL’s new “Moneyball” world making a star of Sharks’ Matt Nieto – ContraCostaTimes.com

Like all trainers and support staff within our organization, Clint was instrumental in helping our players and coaches prepare and compete both on and off the ice. Our sincerest sympathies go out to the Reif family. While the cause of death is still unknown according to reports, the below blurb was published in the Chicago Sun-Times. According to a DuPage County coroner statement, Reif was found unresponsive in his Lombard home, where he was pronounced dead at 8:32 a.m. The death still is under investigation by the coroners office and Lombard police, officials said. The above photo is a decal players wore for Reif on their helmets in Sunday’s game against Toronto. The Blackhawks held a moment of silence prior to the contest For all these guys who spend a lot of time together, it’s like losing a family member. Reif was in his ninth season with the Blackhawks, according to the team’s website. Following the game, a 4-0 win by the Blackhawks, there was clearly a sullen mood amongst the players. From the Chicago Tribune: Asked what made Reif so special, Patrick Sharp began to answer but then apologized and walked out of the dressing room. Duncan Keith, who was perhaps the player closest to Reif, said: “It was tough. To lose a close friend and have to try to play a hockey game on that same day, it wasn’t easy.” From CSN Chicago: “It’s tough to describe,” (Jonathan) Toews said, pausing between each sentence. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/blackhawks-assistant-equipment-manager-passes-away-sunday-morning-225437738.html

Blackhawks assistant equipment manager dies Sunday morning | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports

I don’t know what the reason is, but it’s noteworthy that teams I consider old-school were at the forefront of hires.” General manager Doug Wilson says the Sharks have been true believers for the last five or six years. “It’s a part in the process that I think is of value — it might not be first or the second, but it’s certainly part and it enhances our decision-making process,” Wilson said. “Having as much information as possible when you are making decisions, to me is a smart approach.” Those decisions involve everything from drafting players to making trades to offering contract extensions. The data also can help on coaching decisions, such as determing which player should take a critical defensive zone faceoff. Now, back to those definitions. Corsi — the stat named after goalie coach Jim Corsi — provides the foundation of hockey analytics and tracks all shot attempts, not just those on net. During his time on staff with the Buffalo Sabres and now the St. Louis Blues, Corsi also charted the number of blocked shots and those that go high or wide, information available for years, but rarely compiled. That total, advocates say, provides a better idea which team and which players spend the most time in the offensive zone. Fenwick, another building block of analytics, excludes blocked shots from the Corsi data. Alberta blogger Matt Fenwick, who came up with the variation, says that is a better predictor of future performance, and he’s not alone. But nothing is really that simple. source: http://www.contracostatimes.com/breaking-news/ci_27206378/nhls-new-moneyball-world-making-star-sharks-matt?source=rss

Winnipeg Jets pound Chicago Blackhawks | FOX Sports

It was the Blackhawks’ worst loss of the season; they have only three losses by more than one goal. Chicago (23-10-2) had won 14 of 17 overall. “All year long, I think we’ve been in every hockey game except for tonight,” coach Joel Quenneville said. DK Playbook: Strategies for Winning Cash Games Hockey Marian Hossa scored his seventh goal in the second period, but the Blackhawks struggled to generate quality chances. Jets goalie Michael Hutchinson, who began the day with an NHL-best .940 save percentage and 1.73 goals-against average, finished with 38 saves. It was the Blackhawks’ second game since the sudden death of assistant equipment manager Clint Reif on Sunday morning. They beat Toronto 4-0 that night, but looked all out of sorts against the Jets. “Today was a letdown for us in the game,” forward Kris Versteeg said. “You want to channel your energies in the right direction and do that the best you can. Today we just felt flat.” Winnipeg jumped on Chicago for three goals in the first, chasing Corey Crawford while outshooting the Blackhawks 15-7 in the period. source: http://www.foxsports.com/nhl/story/winnipeg-jets-pound-chicago-blackhawks-122314
