That’s why general manager Stan Bowman and Quenneville have not washed their hands of the 6’4″, 233-pound winger who sometimes appears invisible on the scoresheet and on the ice. With his size and strength, Bickell should be banging bodies, crashing the net and increasing his team’s production. Bickell has scored four goals and earned seven assists in 35 games this season. If he was not a player who had scored 16 goals in the last two playoff years, we would advocate dumping Bickell and his $4 million annual salary . However, that would not be prudent, even though Bickell regularly causes Quenneville and the coaching staff consternation. Bickell should be benched for at least two games so he gets the message that his regular-season performance is not acceptable. Return Brad Richards to the Lineup When Healthy, But… Paul Vernon/Associated Press Brad Richards missed the Blackhawks’ last two games prior to the Christmas break with an upper-body injury. While Richards had a bit of a slow start, his play had picked up in recent weeks prior to his injury, and he has scored six goals and earned 12 assists. While this is not stellar production, he seems to fit in nicely between Kane and Versteeg on the second line. Richards does a nice job of recognizing scoring opportunities, and he has the ability to fire stretch passes that cause problems for opponents. The Blackhawks are a stronger team when he is in the lineup. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2310874-5-lineup-changes-the-chicago-blackhawks-should-consider-for-the-new-year

Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons, Chicago Blackhawks leading All-Star vote | FOX Sports

Jonathan Toews, Chicago Blackhawks make totally awesome All-Star bid “If I have to, it’s awesome” said Girgensons, the only Latvian currently playing in the NHL. “It’ll be satisfaction to the fans, really.” Selected in the first-round of the 2012 draft, Girgensons has established himself as a skilled two-way forward, and part of the rebuilding team’s young core. Girgensons leads Buffalo (13-18-3) with nine goals and is second with 18 points. That puts him well off the league-leading pace. Dallas center Tyler Seguin is first with 25 goals, while Philadelphia’s Jakub Voracek tops the points list with 44. Sabres coach Ted Nolan said Girgensons has nothing to be ashamed of. “I wouldn’t be embarrassed at all,” Nolan said. “The whole nation’s cheering for him, which is great to see. So he should feel a lot of pride.” Nolan knows plenty about Girgensons and Latvia. He spent the previous four years coaching Latvia’s national team, which included Girgensons. NHL’s new “Moneyball” world making a star of Sharks’ Matt Nieto – ContraCostaTimes.com

I don’t know what the reason is, but it’s noteworthy that teams I consider old-school were at the forefront of hires.” General manager Doug Wilson says the Sharks have been true believers for the last five or six years. “It’s a part in the process that I think is of value — it might not be first or the second, but it’s certainly part and it enhances our decision-making process,” Wilson said. “Having as much information as possible when you are making decisions, to me is a smart approach.” Those decisions involve everything from drafting players to making trades to offering contract extensions. The data also can help on coaching decisions, such as determing which player should take a critical defensive zone faceoff. Now, back to those definitions. Corsi — the stat named after goalie coach Jim Corsi — provides the foundation of hockey analytics and tracks all shot attempts, not just those on net. During his time on staff with the Buffalo Sabres and now the St. Louis Blues, Corsi also charted the number of blocked shots and those that go high or wide, information available for years, but rarely compiled. That total, advocates say, provides a better idea which team and which players spend the most time in the offensive zone. Fenwick, another building block of analytics, excludes blocked shots from the Corsi data. Alberta blogger Matt Fenwick, who came up with the variation, says that is a better predictor of future performance, and he’s not alone. But nothing is really that simple. source: http://www.contracostatimes.com/breaking-news/ci_27206378/nhls-new-moneyball-world-making-star-sharks-matt?source=rss

NHL: Sabres’ Girgensons surprised by all-star vote – Sports – The Telegram – Herkimer, NY

(AP) Zemgus Girgensons feels a little sheepish discussing how fans back home in Latvia have clicked and quadruple-clicked his name so often that the Sabres forward is running away with the NHL All-Star Game vote. The second-year player appreciates the overwhelming support he’s received from the Baltic nation. And yet the 20-year-old Girgensons doesn’t consider himself worthy of being included among the league’s elite. “It’s a little bit embarrassing and funny at the same time,” Girgensons said, before the Sabres hit the road for a two-game swing that concludes Tuesday at Detroit. “It came out of nowhere. I know people know me back home, but I didn’t think it was going to go that far. That’s like crazy far.” As of Tuesday, Girgensons has a league-leading 1,291,186 votes, with about 80 percent coming from Latvia. The only limit on voting is fans can use the same device no more than 10 times a day. Chicago’s Patrick Kane (815,990 votes) is second among forwards, followed by teammate Jonathan Toews (803,034). Blackhawks players hold down the three other remaining spots eligible to be selected by vote. Chicago’s Duncan Keith (790,922) and Brent Seabrook (641,736) lead defensemen, and Corey Crawford (714,471) leads goalies. source: http://www.herkimertelegram.com/article/20141225/SPORTS/141229693/2000/NEWS
