The genetics of the mumps is relatively stable. The vaccine effectiveness doesn’t change from year to year.” The vaccine for mumps is about 88% effective. “Part of the (concern) is to some degree because of the success of the vaccine,” Wallace said. “Because of the success you don’t hear about mumps so much. When you do hear about it, people say why is that happening? Particularly if you have something high profile like with a professional sports team. We’ve certainly had bigger outbreaks in other settings.” It seems clear that teams are trying to be overly cautious as the outbreak continues to spread: the Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins have all had reported cases. The Columbus Blue Jackets said they thoroughly cleansed their visiting dressing room after the Penguins left town after a 4-3 win Saturday night. The room was scrubbed clean and every water bottle was thrown out. The Islanders have already sent over the toys they were going to distribute to the children. “We’re extremely disappointed that the event has been postponed, but understand the circumstances,” Islanders forward Kyle Okposo said. source: http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nhl/nhl-teams-cancel-public-appearances-amid-mumps-concern/ar-BBgTlfM?srcref=rss

Duncan Keith out sick, Blackhawks coach ‘not sure’ if it’s mumps – CBSSports.com

Duncan Keith won

Now there are questions if the spreading virus has hit the Chicago Blackhawks as star defenseman Duncan Keith will miss Tuesday night’s game against the Minnesota Wild with an illness. When asked if it could be the mumps, head coach Joel Quenneville said, Not sure about that. I don’t know what’s wrong. He’s sick. (via Chicago Sun-Times ) Keith is well known as one of the more fit players in the league and he has often logged major minutes for the Blackhawks over the years. A lot of players play through various illnesses and ailments, so either the Blackhawks are being extremely cautious, or Keith is feeling pretty terrible. Mumps has officially hit five NHL teams so far including the Wild, Anaheim Ducks , New Jersey Devils , New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins . The St. Louis Blues never had a confirmed case of the mumps, but they had players go down with illness as well earlier in the year. Sidney Crosby was recently felled by the disease while Penguins teammate Beau Bennett has a suspected, but unconfirmed case. Rangers center Derick Brassard was also sent home from his team’s recent road trip with a suspected case of the mumps as well. Paranoia reigns supreme as more and more players fall ill to the uncommon virus. If Keith does indeed have the mumps, the Blackhawks could expect others to get it as well. source: http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/24895258/duncan-keith-out-sick-blackhawks-coach-not-sure-if-its-mumps

Its a good little run were on here and we want to keep it going, Smith said. Even when were up two goals in the third and they storm back to tie, we found the way to get the job done. Minnesotas Thomas Vanek scored in the first period as the Central Division rivals met for the first time since the Blackhawks defeated the Wild in the second round of last seasons playoffs. Antti Raanta made 26 saves as Blackhawks No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford sat out an eighth game because of a foot injury sustained when he left a concert two weeks ago. Crawford is expected to return this weekend. Niklas Backstrom made 34 saves. He finished the game despite coming down with a stomach ailment after the first period, coach Mike Yeo said. What bothered Yeo most was the late one-handed hooking call on Erik Haula that led to Kanes power-play winner. The third period was great, Yeo said. Its a tie game, and weve got five minutes left. As far as Im concerned we have the momentum. source: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/dec/17/kanes-late-goal-lifts-blackhawks-past-wild-5-3/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS

After four weeks of various teams jockeying at the top, we have a repeat No. 1 as the Blackhawks edged the Ducks in our polling.Ourthree scribesAllan Muir, Sarah Kwak and Sam Pagesubmitted their choices for the league’s Top 10. The rankings for the all 30 teams have beenweighted according to ancient Babylonianaccounting principles as well as how high each club came in on our writers’ ballots. In some cases a purely intuitive, wholly unscientific and no doubt deplorable methodwas used to break ties, rank teams that were chosen by only one or two writers, and antagonize the general public. We’ve presented the 30 teams in groups, with the Top 10 receiving the most trenchant commentary. Overview paragraphs precede the Middle 10 and Bottom 10. Weekly movement up or down has been noted. source: http://www.si.com/nhl/2014/12/16/power-rankings-blackhawks-hold-top-spot-as-sharks-maple-leafs-rise?xid=si_topstories
