Erixon, 23, had one goal and five assists in 19 games with Columbus this season. He scored his first NHL goal on Oct. 26 at Los Angeles. Now there are questions if the spreading virus has hit the Chicago Blackhawks as star defenseman Duncan Keith will miss Tuesday night’s game against the Minnesota Wild with an illness. When asked if it could be the mumps, head coach Joel Quenneville said, Not sure about that. I don’t know what’s wrong. He’s sick. (via Chicago Sun-Times ) Keith is well known as one of the more fit players in the league and he has often logged major minutes for the Blackhawks over the years. A lot of players play through various illnesses and ailments, so either the Blackhawks are being extremely cautious, or Keith is feeling pretty terrible. Mumps has officially hit five NHL teams so far including the Wild, Anaheim Ducks , New Jersey Devils , New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins . The St. Louis Blues never had a confirmed case of the mumps, but they had players go down with illness as well earlier in the year. Sidney Crosby was recently felled by the disease while Penguins teammate Beau Bennett has a suspected, but unconfirmed case. Rangers center Derick Brassard was also sent home from his team’s recent road trip with a suspected case of the mumps as well. Paranoia reigns supreme as more and more players fall ill to the uncommon virus. source: http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/24895258/duncan-keith-out-sick-blackhawks-coach-not-sure-if-its-mumps

Big moves bring big hope for Chicago baseball – Yahoo Sports

… I’m going to play [Saturday].” The Blackhawks went 7-1-0 in Crawford’s absence. Goaltenders Antti Raanta and Scott Darling each started four games during that span and combined for a .947 save percentage in the eight games. Darling was reassigned to Chicago’s AHL affiliate on Tuesday, and Raanta will back up Crawford on Saturday. “I think we’ve been very fortunate with the consistency of our goaltenders this year no matter who has been in net,” Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said Friday. “Game in, game out, getting the job done. [Crawford] looked good today in practice. He’s been pushing it to get in here. Give him a chance to get in here before the holiday.” Crawford was off to the best start of any of his NHL seasons prior to the injury. He ranks fourth in the NHL in goals-against average and seventh in save percentage. He wasn’t concerned about getting back to that level. source: http://espn.go.com/chicago/nhl/story/_/id/12053117/chicago-blackhawks-corey-crawford-return-saturday-8-games

Duncan Keith out sick, Blackhawks coach ‘not sure’ if it’s mumps – CBSSports.com

It’s the first phase of a four-year, $575 million that will overhaul a stadium that just completed its 100th season and bring a hotel to the neighborhood. The moves made by the two baseball teams could not have come at a better time for Chicago fans. After all, the NFL’s Bears are in a complete meltdown even if the NBA’s Bulls and NHL’s Blackhawks are not. ”I think it’s exciting,” said Theo Epstein, the Cubs president of baseball operations who has been busy since he was hired in October 2011. ”Chicago baseball hasn’t been what it should be the last few years and with both teams taking a big step forward this winter, it only benefits Chicago baseball fans.” All the moves have led to a surge in activity on the business side. ”Our moves combined with the moves that the Cubs have done, it’s really put – at a time of year when you don’t see this – baseball at the forefront,” White Sox senior vice president of sales and marketing Brooks Boyer said. ”To hear all the chatter about baseball and kind of supplanting football on the front page, that’s certainly not a bad thing for baseball in Chicago. It really shows you the interest that the market has.” Both teams have seen a decline in attendance in recent years, with the Cubs drawing 2,652,113 last season after a franchise-record 3,300,200 on the way to the NL Central championship in 2008. The drop has been even steeper for the White Sox, who went from a franchise-best 2,957,411 in 2006, when they were coming off a championship run, to 1,650,821 in 2014. Good seats might not be as easy to find after all the deals. ”I have been a Sox fan for over 30 years and I don’t remember an offseason quite like this,” said Tom Dorsey, who grew up near the ballpark in the Bridgeport neighborhood and still lives there. He can see why Cubs fans are excited, too. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/big-moves-bring-big-hope-chicago-baseball-170242978–mlb.html
