Blackhawks send Morin to Blue Jackets for Erixon – Washington Times

His coach Joel Quenneville said he did not know whether Keith had the mumps or another medical issue. Teams are trying to be proactive in stopping the spread of mumps, using similar tactics they use when dealing with the flu every winter. Teams are offering mumps shots, and many are testing players to see if their antibody count is high. “Influenza is more complicated because the genetics can change from year to year,” Wallace said. “Certainly there are a lot more influenza cases every year than there are mumps cases. The genetics of the mumps is relatively stable. The vaccine effectiveness doesn’t change from year to year.” The vaccine for mumps is about 88% effective. “Part of the (concern) is to some degree because of the success of the vaccine,” Wallace said. “Because of the success you don’t hear about mumps so much. When you do hear about it, people say why is that happening? source: http://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nhl/nhl-teams-cancel-public-appearances-amid-mumps-concern/ar-BBgTlfM?srcref=rss

Duncan Keith out sick, Blackhawks coach ‘not sure’ if it’s mumps – CBSSports.com

Duncan Keith won

Tough game. Marian Hossa and Brent Seabrook also scored, and Ben Smith added an empty net goal for the Blackhawks, who won for the 10th time in 11 games. And they did it without top defenseman Duncan Keith, who was sidelined by an undisclosed illness. Its a good little run were on here and we want to keep it going, Smith said. Even when were up two goals in the third and they storm back to tie, we found the way to get the job done. Minnesotas Thomas Vanek scored in the first period as the Central Division rivals met for the first time since the Blackhawks defeated the Wild in the second round of last seasons playoffs. Antti Raanta made 26 saves as Blackhawks No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford sat out an eighth game because of a foot injury sustained when he left a concert two weeks ago. Crawford is expected to return this weekend. Niklas Backstrom made 34 saves. He finished the game despite coming down with a stomach ailment after the first period, coach Mike Yeo said. What bothered Yeo most was the late one-handed hooking call on Erik Haula that led to Kanes power-play winner. The third period was great, Yeo said. source: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/dec/17/kanes-late-goal-lifts-blackhawks-past-wild-5-3/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS

Photo: Charles Rex Arbogast, ASSOCIATED PRESS Tweet CHICAGO There was something appropriate about Brett Sutter making his Wild debut against the Chicago Blackhawks. His father, Los Angeles Kings coach Darryl Sutter, used to coach the Blackhawks and spent his entire playing career with Chicago. Brett Sutter lived in Chicago as a kid and was a big Blackhawks fan. My dads history playing here and coaching here, its exciting, said Sutter, 27, who played his 55th NHL game over parts of seven seasons. They were my childhood team growing up here, so its definitely neat. Sutter, signed last summer by Minnesota to be a depth player, has spent most his career in the minors and was recalled to replace injured Ryan Carter at fourth-line wing. Of the seven Sutter brothers, six played in the NHL, and they were all gritty. So it wasnt a shock to hear Brett describe himself as a hard-working player. Im going to win every battle I can and keep it real simple and just play a heavy game, be physical and do what I can to help the team. Its been a tough year for the Iowa Wild, but Sutter said things are on the upswing since John Torchetti took over as coach last month. Honesty and hard work, thats what he preaches, Sutter said. He tells you how it is, whether you want to hear it or not. I think thats what we kind of needed. Morin has no points in 15 NHL games this season. The winger was assigned to Rockford of the AHL for a conditioning assignment Tuesday because he wasnt playing at all with the loaded Blackhawks. Its a good chance for Mo to play and for Timmy to join our organization, Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said before Sunday nights game against Calgary. The 23-year-old Erixon is looking to get established in that continued rotation and show he can play at our level, Quenneville continued. Well get to find out a little bit more about him tonight in joining our team, and complement our team game as well. Morin, 23, has eight goals and eight assists in 54 career regular-season games, all with Chicago. He also played in two postseason games in May. The Blue Jackets next game is Tuesday night in Detroit. Erixon had one goal and five assists in 19 games with Columbus this season. He scored his first NHL goal on Oct. 26 at Los Angeles. Its exciting for me, Erixon said. source: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/dec/14/blackhawks-send-morin-to-blue-jackets-for-erixon/?utm_source=RSS_Feed&utm_medium=RSS

Sutter’s debut vs. Blackhawks fitting | Star Tribune

When asked if it could be the mumps, head coach Joel Quenneville said, Not sure about that. I don’t know what’s wrong. He’s sick. (via Chicago Sun-Times ) Keith is well known as one of the more fit players in the league and he has often logged major minutes for the Blackhawks over the years. A lot of players play through various illnesses and ailments, so either the Blackhawks are being extremely cautious, or Keith is feeling pretty terrible. Mumps has officially hit five NHL teams so far including the Wild, Anaheim Ducks , New Jersey Devils , New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins . The St. Louis Blues never had a confirmed case of the mumps, but they had players go down with illness as well earlier in the year. Sidney Crosby was recently felled by the disease while Penguins teammate Beau Bennett has a suspected, but unconfirmed case. Rangers center Derick Brassard was also sent home from his team’s recent road trip with a suspected case of the mumps as well. Paranoia reigns supreme as more and more players fall ill to the uncommon virus. If Keith does indeed have the mumps, the Blackhawks could expect others to get it as well. source: http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/24895258/duncan-keith-out-sick-blackhawks-coach-not-sure-if-its-mumps
