Pick: Capitals 4, Islanders 2 Minnesota Wild at Dallas Stars , 8:30 p.m. ET The Stars are trying to work their way back into the playoff race after a disappointing start to the season — a start that included a seven-game losing streak at one point — and finally seem to be playing close to the level that many expected them to be at this season. One player who hasn’t been a disappointment has been Tyler Seguin, who enters this game with 28 points, good for a tie with Evgeni Malkin for third in the NHL’s scoring race. They’re going to need another big game from him and Jamie Benn if they are going to run their current winning streak to four games. Pick: Stars 3, Wild 1 The rest of Friday’s schedule Edmonton Oilers at St. Louis Blues , 8 p.m. ET Three stars 1. Max Pacioretty , Montreal Canadiens: Pacioretty continues to be one of the NHL’s most underappreciated goal scorers and is on his way to yet another 30-goal season, something he has done in two of the past three seasons (the lockout-shortened season in 2012-13 is the only exception). He enters play Friday with 10 goals in 23 games and is averaging nearly three-and-a-half shots on goal per game. 2. Evgeni Malkin , Pittsburgh Penguins: Right now Malkin is playing some of his best hockey of the season, which is quite a statement when you consider that he has points in 18 of the Penguins’ 21 games this season. source: http://www.cbssports.com/nhl/eye-on-hockey/24845386/nhl-daily-picks-flyers-look-to-get-back-on-track-against-rangers

NHL Three Stars: Leafs, Caps downed in OT; Patrick Kane, boy wizard; Captain Pickard | Puck Daddy – Yahoo Sports

It was Talbot’s second of the season. The Blackhawks finally broke through when Brent Seabrook ‘s shot from the point trickled through Pickard’s legs and Toews knocked it into an empty net to tie it. It was Toews’ 10th goal of the season. That ended Pickard’s scoreless streak at 149 minutes, 24 seconds. Less than three minutes later, Shaw made it 2-1 on another power play when he beat Pickard with a one-timer from the left circle. It was his fourth of the season. “I thought Pickard was outstanding out there,” Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said. “He had some great saves for us. He was good on the (penalty kill). He was our best player. source: http://stats.denver.cbslocal.com/nhl/recap.asp?lg=NHL&g=2014112617&ref=rec&tm=17&src=NHL

3 Star: Calvin Pickard , Colorado Avalanche WHO?? Exactly. The 22-year-old backup to the backup netminder for the Avs drew the short straw and had to face the Chicago Blackhawks in his fifth ever NHL game. He may have taken the loss, but the kid made 45 saves against a pretty good team. Honorable Mention: The Islanders were credited with 55 (!!) hits to the Caps 28 … Washington was 2-for-2 on the power play and the Islanders were 2-for-3; either both teams are really good on the man advantage or really bad on the penalty kill … Alex Ovechkin scored 2 power play goals in the 3-2 OT loss to NYI; John Tavares netted the winner on the power play (natch) … My, what wonderful power play passing skills you have, Pittsburgh Penguins … … Martin St. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/nhl-three-stars–leafs–caps-downed-in-ot–patrick-kane–boy-wizard–captain-pickard-070423783.html

NHL Daily Picks: Flyers look to get back on track against Rangers – CBSSports.com

The Philadelphia Flyers haven

— Alexander Semin’s sad story continues. He’s on a four-game pointless streak. In the previous three games, he only managed two SOG. The effort was there more last night (three SOG in 19:42 TOI), yet this seems like a dour situation. Maybe it’s best if he Kovalchuk’s away? (It’s depressing to write things like this regarding a player who I’ve stood up for a lot over the years. I’m not even sure how much of it is desire vs. health, but it’s a bad situation either way.) PENGUINS 4, MAPLE LEAFS 3 (OT) — Interesting line combos for the Penguins. It looks like Chris Kunitz and Blake Comeau were having a go alongside Evgeni Malkin while Patric Hornqvist and Nick Spaling skated with Sidney Crosby. Comeau was the biggest winner of the deal: a hat trick, four SOG, five hits and a +2 rating. — Jonathan Bernier update: 7-5-3 with a solid .915 save percentage. Whether it’s been Bernier or James Reimer in net, goaltending’s rarely been the issue for Toronto. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/dose-dats-more-123000393–nhl.html
