Have the Ducks Supplanted the Blackhawks as ‘Other’ Team to Beat in the West? | Bleacher Report

By Steve Macfarlane , Featured Columnist Nov 7, 2014 Use your (arrow) keys to browse more stories USA TODAY Sports 28 Comments Dont look now, Chicago Blackhawks, theres another heavyweight looking to take your spot as the “other” team to beat in the Western Conference. The Anaheim Ducks this week became the first NHL franchise to hit 10 victories on the season, heading into Thursday nights action as the top team in the league standingssix points ahead of the Blackhawks with one more game played. Like the Blackhawks, who added Brad Richards via free agency in the offseason, the Ducks made an effort to improve their depth at the center positiona trend made popular by the Los Angeles Kings’ blueprint, which has led to two Stanley Cup championships in three seasons. Bringing in Ryan Kesler through a trade with the Vancouver Canucks in June, the Ducks believed they had the missing piece after losing in seven games to the Kings in the second round of the playoffs last spring. Head coach Bruce Boudreau was ecstatic upon hearing about the acquisition, gushing to NHL.com : It gives you strength down the middle. I’ve never coached a team in the NHL that’s had a second-line center that you’re going to have with Ryan Kesler. It’s a great, and it gets you excited. … In the last couple of years, we thought we were a threat. This makes us a bona fide threat to become an elite team. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2255518-have-the-ducks-supplanted-the-blackhawks-as-other-team-to-beat-in-the-west

Well, Bs general manager Peter Chiarelli would have some tough decisions to make. Boston has 12 players eligible for unrestricted or restricted free agency (six each) on July 1. The notable UFAs are Carl Soderberg and Adam McQuaid. The RFA list is longer and includes severalimportant players. Defensemen Dougie Hamilton, David Warsofsky and Torey Krug, along with forwards Reilly Smith and Matt Fraser are the five-best RFAs on the horizon. Hamilton, Smith and Krug, in particular, could be in line for huge raises. The Bruins have $56.4 million of the cap tied up in 14 players for next season, per CapGeek, which could leave them with less than$15 million to re-sign their own free agents if the ceiling doesnt rise much for 2015-16. The Chicago Blackhawks might be in even more trouble because the matching eight-year, $84 million extensions signed by Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane begin next season. Its been speculated thattop-six forward Patrick Sharp could be traded at some point to help alleviate some of Chicagos cap issues. His contract, which carries a $5.9 million cap hit, expires after the 2016-17 season. We are many months away from knowing the official salary cap figures for 2015-16, but this story still is one worth watching throughthe end of the 2015 Stanley Cup playoffs. source: http://nesn.com/2014/11/report-nhl-salary-cap-might-not-increase-in-2015-16-season/

Sharp led Chicago last season with 34 goals and 44 assists. Washington star Alex Ovechkin was held without a point after recording two assists on Tuesday to become the leading scorer in franchise history. The Blackhawks dominated as the first period progressed. Saad opened the scoring with 2:48 left in the period on Chicago’s 15th shot to complete a 2-on-1 break with Marian Hossa. After taking Hossa’s cross-ice pass, Saad fired a low one-timer that struck the inside of Holtby’s left pad and slid into the net. Ovechkin was penalized for an illegal hit to the head of Chicago defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson with 16 seconds left in the first, and Keith scored on the power play 56 seconds into the second to make it 2-0. He swooped into the right circle and fired in a rebound through traffic. The Capitals then connected three times late in the period to take the lead. The last two goals came 42 seconds apart in the final minute. Burakovsky cut it to 2-1 with 4:57 left to complete a 2-on-1 with Troy Brouwer. source: http://www.journalgazette.net/article/20141107/SPORTS2004/141109527/-1/sports12
