5 Things the Toronto Maple Leafs Must Improve Upon to Beat Chicago Blackhawks | Bleacher Report

The rookie, who has centered all but the first line in 12 games, continues to acclimate to the north-south style of the NHL and a new position after starring as a wing in the KHL. Four of Kuznetsovs six points have come on the power play and he has been one of Washingtons weaker skaters at even-strength in regards to puck possession, despite starting over 65 percent of his shifts in the offensive zone. Trotz spoke of the process and patience required by Kuznetsov in his situation. Im actually quite happy with him, Trotz said. Hes got a great attitude. I dont really have any reservation. I think Kuzys going to be a good player. He understands that weve got some guys, for a situational type thing, we might go in a little different direction for a game or two games. The North American style of play is still foreign to the young Russian, who says hell be prepared to contribute if and when called upon. This is hockey life, Kuznetsov said. Today you dont play, tomorrow you play. source:

The Leafs, well, not so much. While the Blackhawks can bring something less than their “A” game to the rink and pull out a victory, the Leafs cannot. Let’s take a look at five things the Leafs must improve upon to beat Chicago this weekend. All stats can be found on unless noted otherwise. All stats are prior to play on Friday, Oct. 31. Contain the Blackhawks’ Superstars USA TODAY Sports The Leafs have not done a good job of containing opponents’ top players this season. The Detroit Red Wings’ Henrik Zetterberg is the best example of this, as he dominated the Leafs earlier this year. It will take total team defense to contain the Blackhawks’ top players. Jonathan Toews, Patrick Sharp and Patrick Kane are off to good starts in 2014-15. All of these players are elite offensive talents. It will take great efforts from the Leafs’ top defensive forwards, as well as by the Leafs’ blueliners, to ensure this trio doesn’t embarrass the club. Toews and Kane, in particular, can put up a mittful of points in mere minutes if not defended well. source:

Again, we get good chances and a lot of pucks around the net, and its not going in, Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. We need to find a way to break out of that funk as far as goal scoring goes. The Jets got all the offense they needed early as they moved straight into the Chicago zone off the opening faceoff. Michael Frolik, a former Blackhawks player, skated across the crease, closed in from the left side and lifted the puck past Crawfords glove as the goalie sprawled while trying to stop the shot. Chicagos Patrick Sharp broke in alone with 3:40 left in the first and faked Hutchinson to the ice, but his shot clanked off the right post. Toews fired a drive from the left circle off the left post midway through the second during a Chicago power play. Hutchinson stopped another prime chance by Sharp moments later. The Blackhawks shot wide on some of their best chances in the third period. NOTES: Hutchinson was pulled early in the second period of his only previous start this season, a 4-1 loss at Los Angeles on Oct. 12, after he allowed three goals on 13 shots. He also replaced Pavelec in the third period of a 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay on Oct. 24. source:
