Hiller helps Flames beat Blackhawks 2-1 – Yahoo Sports

He stopped an open Kane with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the opening period, and denied Jeremy Morin on consecutive shots in the second. Daniel Carcillo also misplayed a prime opportunity 6 1/2 minutes into the game after Ben Smith’s drive and dish created an open side of the net for the winger. Sharp had a nice look in the second, and then slammed his stick against the glass after Hiller made the save. NHL: Healthy, happy league leaning west – Sports – The Telegram – Herkimer, NY

Load More TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Steven Stamkos was a little upset at himself after not scoring a goal in the first two games of the season. He took out his frustration on the Montreal Canadiens . Stamkos scored three times, defenseman Victor Hedman had a career-high four points and the Tampa Bay Lightning routed the Canadiens 7-1 on Monday night. After Stamkos scored on a breakaway off a pass from deep in the defensive zone by Hedman at 13:15 of the second period, the Lightning captain completed the hat trick from the top of the right circle on Tampa Bay’s sixth power-play goal this season. That made it 4-1 with 1:46 left in the middle period. ”I’ve learned over the years that you stick with it, usually the flood gates open,” Stamkos said. The star forward took 12 shots on net. ”Obviously, he scored some goals out there tonight,” Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban said. ”We know he can do that, but in the playoffs last year we were a lot better than we were tonight. I’d tell Steven to enjoy it because the next time it’s not going to happen.” It was the first game between the teams since Montreal completed a first-round playoff sweep last April. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/stamkos-scores-3-lightning-rout-canadiens-7-1-023009717–nhl.html

Stamkos scores 3, Lightning rout Canadiens 7-1 – Yahoo Sports

The NHL reduced its slate of outdoor games from six to two this season, hitting only Washington, D.C., and Californias Bay Area, while adding an old-fashioned indoor All-Star weekend for Columbus in January. The league and the players union also are inching toward reviving the World Cup of Hockey, likely celebrating a 2016 return for the summer showcase event. The league made some minor rule tweaks, notably banning the spin-o-rama move on penalty shots and shootouts a huge disappointment for the few players capable of doing it effectively. The NHL also instituted slightly bigger fines for players caught diving and for their coaches, who will be charged for repeat offenders on their rosters. The new catchphrase is dry scrape. Thats the brief ice-grooming maneuver instituted before overtime to encourage more extra-time goals. Teams will also switch ends of the ice before OT, and coaches are no longer required to name their first three faceoff shooters in advance. In another indication of the NHLs health, the league got indirect publicity shortly before training camps with scattered media reports of the leagues plans for another round of expansion. Hockey fans in Seattle, Quebec City, Las Vegas and the Toronto suburbs got understandably excited, even while Commissioner Gary Bettman called the stories bogus. Most teams are bursting with the usual preseason optimism before the opening faceoffs, but even a miserable winter in 2014-15 comes with a hopeful spring. The worst clubs will get a chance to draft Connor McDavid or Jack Eichel, two prospects widely thought to be franchise-changing talents. Were coming off the best season in our history, Bettman said recently. source: http://www.herkimertelegram.com/article/20141008/SPORTS/141009458/2000/NEWS
