Ankle mobility/neck Meanwhile, O’Brien employs an approach that feels a bit more scientific, tailoring each program to the individual by assessing movement efficiency and muscle imbalances and by incorporating extensive video work. O’Brien, who also brings up “Rocky IV” and said he was mesmerized as a youngster by the way the Russians could actually calculate performance in the iconic movie, studies skating and playmaking intently and uses that as a guiding force to instruct his approach. With the different planes of motions at play in hockey, O’Brien tries to home in on specific movements and actions that have a direct translation onto the ice. Take the crossover in hockey, a move essential to most every player’s performance. O’Brien tries to increase force production in his workouts to aid in that movement, hoping to improve acceleration. O’Brien also has his group make an annual trip to Vail, Colorado, at the end of every summer for altitude training. Although he said the experts are split on how beneficial the physical effects are, O’Brien likes knowing his players are exerting themselves to maximum degrees — a mental task as much as a physical one. Some team togetherness and bonding in an isolated location free from coaches, fans and media doesn’t hurt, either. “It was a good week out there,” Tavares told ESPN.com of his week in Vail this summer. “It always gets me ready for the season.” Meanwhile, Connecticut-based Prentiss prides himself on a legion of motivated players to whom his devotion is a constant. source: http://espn.go.com/nhl/preview2014/story/_/id/11587202/2014-15-nhl-season-preview-offseason-training-booming-business-nhl

Blackhawks vs. Rangers final score: Chicago drops another preseason game, 4-1 – Yahoo Sports

Rangers final score: Chicago drops another preseason game, 4-1 By Satchel Price 1 hour ago View photo . Two early goals and two late goals put the Hawks away in a 4-1 preseason loss to the Rangers on Friday. The Chicago Blackhawks started slow for the third straight preseason game and couldn’t rally from behind in a 4-1 loss to the New York Rangers on Friday night. Two goals in the first 11 minutes and another pair in the third period put away the second game of the preseason at the United Center. It took less than a minute before the Rangers scored the first goal of the game, with Oscar Lindberg getting a wrist shot past Corey Crawford just 50 seconds in. New York kept the pressure on from there, getting a second score by Anthony Duclair just before the 11th minute. The Blackhawks rallied in the second period to at least make things interesting, outshooting the Rangers, 14-8, and getting a goal in the process. Dennis Rasmussen’s score wouldn’t be enough, however, considering the way things went in the final 20 minutes. There was some solid play in the offensive zone at times, and even a couple quality saves by New York backup goalie Cedrick Desjardins , but unlucky bounces prevented any chance of this game being interesting. The first one, by J.T. Miller , came on a deflection, and the second was just a straight-up bizarre play as Marek Hrivik managed to flick a puck past Crawford while awkwardly fighting for possession near the net. So the Hawks fall to 1-2 in the preseason after back-to-back losses, not that anyone is particularly caught up with this. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-vs-rangers-final-score-031132197.html

Blackhawks cut roster to 36 players with late-night moves – Yahoo Sports

Three players were assigned to Rockford and Cam Barker was released after last night’s preseason loss to New York. The Chicago Blackhawks made a number of moves after last night’s loss to the New York Rangers , trimming their active roster to 36 players entering the weekend. Forwards Matt Carey and Phillip Danault and defenseman Stephen Johns were assigned to the Rockford IceHogs, while defenseman Cam Barker was released. The team’s active roster now includes 21 forwards, 11 defensemen and four goaltenders with just a couple weeks before the beginning of the regular season. Like the moves that the Blackhawks made earlier on Friday, none of these are particularly surprising. Carey, Danault and Johns are some of the better young players in the organization, but they were all considered long shots to actually make the team out of training camp. More likely, these guys will get early reps with Rockford this year and potentially lend a hand down the road. As for Barker, his brief return to the Blackhawks went about as well as the first go-around. A big blow to Teuvo Teravainen during camp knocked the top prospect out of the first three preseason contests, and for the most part, that’s all people will remember from the former No. 3 overall pick’s second stint in Chicago. Teravainen is expected to make his preseason debut, along with Joakim Nordstrom and Kris Versteeg , on Sunday against Edmonton. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-cut-roster-36-players-170457720.html
