What a great day for hockey. Tonight Detroit matched up against heated rival Chicago Blackhawks . It makes a lot of sense that they didn’t televise this game. You don’t think so? Let me give you a list of reasons: These teams never play each other so who cares No one even likes hockey in Detroit. what are you an asshole It’s just preseason. I’ve never heard of any of these players anyway The Tigers were on! Sigh. Anyways, yeah. No one got to watch this game, unless you were there. source:

Mattias Ekholm Season Preview: Steady as he Goes – Yahoo Sports

The numbers last season dont mean our numbers are going to be the same this season, said captain Gabriel Landeskog earlier this month. They know they cant lean on Varlamov as much. Obviously we need to help out Varly a little bit more, MacKinnon said. We cant give up 40 a night. The Avs put up 112 points last season. That set the bar high. Independent of their philosophy, it will be hard to improve and easy to take a step back, especially considering increased competition. The Western Conference loaded up in the off-season. The Central Division is brutal. Though Sakic told the Denver Post that its who wins the game, the Avs, in their own way, value the process and not just the results. Its important to realize that we might not get 112 points, and we might not win the division this year, Landeskog said. But were still going to be a better team. I think once people understand that, theres going to be some more realistic expectations on us. source:–colorado-avalanche-coach-patrick-roy–gm-joe-sakic-don-t-need-fancy-stats-215624446-nhl.html

We missed out on (or at least didn’t read tweets about) many of the big names on Thursday as they sat out, and it’s unclear for now how the lineup will roll out tonight. It appears that Teuvo Teravainen , Kris Versteeg and Joakim Nordstrom will have to wait until Sunday in Saskatoon to make their respective preseason debuts, which wouldn’t be so disappointing if the game wasn’t a radio-only broadcast. It appears that several bigger names will be playing tonight, however. Here’s the initial game rosters for both teams: #blackhawks lineup tonight against the Rangers. More of the regulars will play, but no Teuvo. Brian Sandalow (@BrianSandalow) September 26, 2014 As for the opponent, New York is expected to play a number of its top players Friday as well, including a top line of Rick Nash , Derick Brassard and rookie Anthony Duclair . The Rangers are still trying to figure things out after losing top center Derek Stepan to a leg injury, and we’ll get an early look at those efforts. One player who apparently won’t be suiting up for Alain Vigneault is forward Kevin Hayes , who’s competing for a roster spot this spring. Of course, there are probably at least a few of you who think Hayes should be doing the same thing in a Hawks uniform right now. Oh well. So that’s how things are shaping up for tonight, luckily this one will be on television so those who couldn’t score a ticket will still be able to tune in. source:

Toews’ OT goal gives Blackhawks win over Red Wings – Washington Times

Ekholm played his way into a new contract this year, and will be a welcome presence on the back end. Before last year, Mattias Ekholm had only played three games across two NHL season. Even though he spent some time rotating in and out of the press box with Victor Bartley , Ekholm suited up for 61 games in 2013-2014, compiling a goal and nine points. The organization rewarded him with atwo-year, one-way contract this summer. The young Swede is going to find himself in the NHL for good this time, and he earned it. Ekholm faced slightly tougher competition than Victor Bartley, and took less sheltered minutes than Ryan Ellis . Hedid pretty well on the ice given both of those caveats. Given that his CF% waspretty much break even, Ekholm should be a lock for the third pair, getting the nod over Bartley, especially whenever Ellis comes back. In training camp, he’s been skating with Seth Jones here and there, perhaps to try and see if the two are a fit and give Ekholm a shot at the second pair. It shouldn’t be the first place he plays, but given that he showed in his first full year he can be a steady presence on the back end, there’s no reason to think he can’t fill in if Anton Volchenkov gets hurt. Best Case Scenario Evolves from “steady” to “rock solid” throughout the course of the year, getting some time on the second pairing and chipping in with a couple of goals. Worst Case Scenario Suffers some kind of injury, or goes back to being the seventh defenseman. source:
