Detroit Red Wings Preseason Recap: Red Wings Lose to Chicago 2-1 in OT – Yahoo Sports

WASHINGTON (AP) With Alex Ovechkin wearing flip-flops and a borrowed pair of baseball pants on a warm start-of-autumn day, the Washington Capitals have unveiled the uniforms they’ll wear when they host the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL’s Winter Classic on Jan. 1 at Nationals Park. At a news conference Tuesday at the baseball stadium, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis says he lobbied NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman from the moment the puck dropped for the first Winter Classic, in 2008. Leonsis says that “for hockey in Washington, D.C., it’s a big moment” to finally host the New Year’s Day game. Hockey nets and the outline of a rink were set up across the back of the dirt diamond and the shallow outfield grass where the NL East Nationals play their home games. What Corey Crawford Has to Do to Get to the Level of the NHL’s Elite Goalkeepers | Bleacher Report

It’s preseason, and the process is more important than the results. Observations from tonight’s game. Neither team was very good in this one. You could see the skill evident plenty of times, but passes which would hit sticks weren’t connecting. Both teams played fairly carefully with each side getting one rather long shift in the offensive zone (Detroit in the first and Chicago in the third). Detroit’s defense did not look particularly good, but that’s not entirely an awful thing. While the four horsemen played fairly well yesterday in Pittsburgh, they didn’t see top-six competition. Detroit’s middle-four defensemen had trouble consistently moving the puck up and out of the zone against Marian Hossa , Jonathan Toews, and Patrick Kane. That’s not alarming, all things considered. What was worrisome there was the play of Jakub Kindl , who started off well enough, but looked more lost than Aaron Rome by the end of the game out there. That’s not a promising sign. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/detroit-red-wings-preseason-recap-033318986.html

Huh/Associated Press 0 Comments There isnt a team in the NHL in more cap trouble than the Chicago Blackhawks . It isnt a coincidence that the Blackhawks have been one of the most successful teams in the league over the last half-decade; the team has had to walk a fine line between keeping itself a contender and complying with the salary ceiling. Unlike Philadelphia , Tampa Bay and Boston (the three teams that CapGeek.com lists as currently being over the cap) Chicago doesnt have a ready-made solution in the form of a player ready to be assigned to long-term injured reserve. What it does have is a useful yet expendable player to dangle in front of other teams. Len Redkoles/Getty Images Back in July, we wrote that trading Nick Leddy for futures was Chicagos easiest way out of its current cap predicament. The removal of his $2.7 million cap hit would go a long way toward getting Chicago back in the black (CapGeeks best guess at the teams roster has them roughly $2.2 million over the league-mandated limit), and with both David Rundblad and Adam Clendening in the system the team has built-in replacement options. Such a trade would also remove an impediment next summer, when Leddy becomes a restricted free agent. Its a far better idea than trading Johnny Oduya, who is much less replaceable in his key role on the Blackhawks shutdown pairing. But even with Leddy gone, the Blackhawks are going to be close to the ceiling. That gives them limited ability later in the year to take on salary to address any weaknesses that have developed or simply to load up with rentals for the playoffs. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2206351-the-chicago-blackhawks-blueprint-to-solving-salary-cap-dilemma

Few openings when it comes to Blackhawks roster | Boston Herald

Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins won the Vezina Trophy as the league’s best goalie, and his top competition included Jonathan Quick of the Kings, Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers and Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens . Crawford, who had a 32-16-10 record along with a 2.26 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage, was a notch below that foursome. It seemed that Crawford’s consistency was the key issue that kept him from playing at his best. He regularly allowed goals that appeared to be stoppable. While he made many spectacular, eye-opening saves that left his teammates, coaches and fans with their mouths agape, he would also pull away from medium- and long-range shots or leave vulnerable rebounds that opponents cashed in with little trouble. The Blackhawks noticed Crawford’s issues, and they brought in a new goaltending coach. Stephane Waite had been Chicago’s goaltending coach through the 2013 campaign, but he left after the championship season to take a similar position with the Canadiens. The Blackhawks hired Steve Weeks as their goaltending coach last year, but head coach Joel Quenneville did not bring him back . Instead, the team hired former Hawks goaltender Jimmy Waite to serve as the goaltending coach and as Crawford’s new mentor. Waite hopes to have the same kind of rapport with Crawford that his brother enjoyed with the goaltender and that his performance improves enough to get the Blackhawks back to the Stanley Cup Final. Im very excited to come back to the Chicago Blackhawks, the team that drafted me in 1987, said Waite in a statement. I look forward to working with Corey (Crawford) and Antti (Raanta), and to help contribute to the success of this organization. The Blackhawks can almost certainly live with a similar regular-season performance from Crawford this year. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2210512-what-corey-crawford-has-to-do-to-get-to-the-level-of-the-nhls-elite-goalkeepers

The Chicago Blackhawks’ Blueprint to Solving Salary Cap Dilemma | Bleacher Report

Marcus Kruger had two goals and an assist to lead the White team to a 5-1 victory over the Red squad in the featured scrimmage. Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith and forward Teuvo Teravainen were among a group of players who rested during the festivities, which attracted a sold-out crowd even with the Chicago Bears playing on Monday Night Football. “Really impressive,” said center Brad Richards, who signed with Chicago in the offseason. “For a Red and White game … I haven’t been a part of something like that. So it just makes you feel better about choosing to come here.” It was the Blackhawks’ first public appearance at their longtime home since they were eliminated by the Kings on Alec Martinez’s overtime goal in Game 7. Martinez’s shot went off Chicago defenseman Nick Leddy and fluttered over goaltender Corey Crawford, a nightmare for the Blackhawks that ended their bid for a repeat title and lingered into the summer for many of the players. “You don’t want to say it’s one situation. We got beat by a good team,” Quenneville said. “But I liked how we played that game. There were a lot of positives which made it tougher than saying we threw it away.” Chicago plays its first exhibition game Tuesday night against Detroit, and the preseason schedule could go a long way to answering the biggest question about the team. The Blackhawks are about $2.2 million above the salary cap and will have to make a move before the regular-season opener Oct. source: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/bruins_nhl/nhl_coverage/2014/09/few_openings_when_it_comes_to_blackhawks_roster
