FlightZone: A Wild Win to End Summer – Yahoo Sports

The Wings got an early goal by the hot-handed Luke Glendening and then couldn’t finish it off, giving up the tying score to Patrick Kane in the 2nd and losing on Duncan Keith ‘s overtime slapper. [Edit: Toews tipped it] That’s really all the recap you need. It’s preseason, and the process is more important than the results. Observations from tonight’s game. Neither team was very good in this one. You could see the skill evident plenty of times, but passes which would hit sticks weren’t connecting. Both teams played fairly carefully with each side getting one rather long shift in the offensive zone (Detroit in the first and Chicago in the third). Detroit’s defense did not look particularly good, but that’s not entirely an awful thing. While the four horsemen played fairly well yesterday in Pittsburgh, they didn’t see top-six competition. Detroit’s middle-four defensemen had trouble consistently moving the puck up and out of the zone against Marian Hossa , Jonathan Toews, and Patrick Kane. That’s not alarming, all things considered. What was worrisome there was the play of Jakub Kindl , who started off well enough, but looked more lost than Aaron Rome by the end of the game out there. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/detroit-red-wings-preseason-recap-033318986.html

Detroit Red Wings Preseason Recap: Red Wings Lose to Chicago 2-1 in OT – Yahoo Sports

20. Police said he was speeding as he lost control in a curve, ran off the road into a line of trees and overturned in a culvert near his Nashville home. The investigation is ongoing, and autopsy results aren’t expected for weeks. Police said there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs at the scene. PITTSBURGH (AP) – Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin called the decision to sign James Harrison ”simple and easy.” Figuring out how – and just as important when – to use the five-time Pro Bowl linebacker, well, that part is a little trickier. The Steelers brought the 36-year-old Harrison out of retirement to give an injury depleted group some needed depth and a locker room in need of some intensity an added jolt. Harrison, who seemed to end his 12-year NFL career during an impromptu news conference Sept. 5, will provide plenty of both. How quickly he sees the field, however, remains uncertain. BASEBALL NEW YORK (AP) – Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig hopes for incremental progress from his new committee that will try to take steps to shorten game times. Atlanta Braves President John Schuerholz chairs the committee, which includes Commissioner-elect Rob Manfred, players’ association head Tony Clark , Boston Red Sox Chairman Tom Werner and partner Michael Gordon , New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson and Major League Baseball Executive Vice President Joe Torre. Blackhawks’ fourth line has the potential to be a lot of fun in 2014-15 – Yahoo Sports

Let’s be real, though, any plea to keep Mashinter as far away from the lineup is going to fall on very deaf ears, given the coaching staff’s insistence on having that type of player in the lineup. Perhaps the largest reason that the Hawks should keep Mashinter out of the lineup is the fact that a fourth line without him in there could just be too much damn fun. In their scrimmage on Monday night, the Hawks rolled with a line that featured Jeremy Morin next to a familiar combination of Marcus Kruger and Ben Smith . There’s still an entire preseason to go, and plenty can still change, but it’s hard to imagine a fourth line that Hawks fans would love to see more than that trio. Last year, the combination of Bollig-Kruger-Smith was constantly used after the top line. They didn’t add much of anything to the stat sheet as far as offense is concerned, but they were an outstanding group a good deal of the time, even with Bollig in tow. They helped to shift momentum in the Hawks’ favor, generating a strong forecheck and playing a strong defensive game from that front line. Substituting Jeremy Morin in there for Bollig has the chance to add another level of excitement to that line. In Morin, you have a player who can play that physical game and bring a tenacious forecheck to the mix. Sure, his defense does leave a bit to be desired, but it’s an improving element of his game. source: http://sports.yahoo.com/news/blackhawks-fourth-line-potential-lot-190537323.html
