The games will come two months after the Jan. 1 Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings on New Year’s Day at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. “When you see how these games light up a market, big markets like Chicago, you are left with the question of why wouldn’t you do more of these?” said NHL Chief Operating Officer John Collins. Although the NHL only announced one game, league officials have been in talks for games at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles and Yankee Stadium in New York as part of a new stadium series concept. The league will view these games as being different from the Winter Classic and the Heritage Classic. There’s also discussion of a game in Vancouver. “The stadium series takes what everyone loves about those games, being outdoors, giving fans the opportunity to tailgate and celebrate the sport in fun venues,” said Collins. “And this allows us to get into markets that we haven’t been able to get into, or get back to markets that we should get back to every 10 or 15 years.” COLUMN: Expanded slate OK for now The NHL’s second Winter Classic was played at Wrigley Field between the Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings “Soldier is one of those iconic venues – a phenomenal stadium, and Chicago is a great market,” Collins said. “We loved the experience at Wrigley, but we need as big a venue as we can have to get in as many fans into this game as possible.” Soldier Field has a seating capacity of about 61,500. “The Winter Classic is a special event from a sponsorship and broadcasting standpoint, just like the Heritage is,” Collins said. source: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nhl/2013/05/01/nhl-soldier-field-outdoor-game-blackhawks-penguins/2126301/

Their physical contributions compound the countless hits totaled by Kunitz, Cooke and grinders Craig Adams and Tanner Glass. When playing a best-of-seven series, an important strategy is exhausting the opposition throughout the course of the round. Scoring can win a game, but physical hockey can win a series. Defense Standout young blueliner Simon Despres. Claus Andersen/Getty Images Pathetic defense in front of Fleury was another major contributing factor to the Penguins’ disappointing 2012 postseason. A lot of things have changed since then. Paul Martin’s defensive play is a 180-degree turn from what it was last year. He’s finally the reliable, top-two shutdown defenseman the Penguins are paying him $5 million to be. He’s chipping in offensively, too. The rest of the Penguins defensemen are stepping up, too. Matt Niskanen is continuing to find his niche as a top-four utility defenseman who can backstop the Penguins in any situation. source: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1623598-pittsburgh-penguins-vs-ny-islanders-5-keys-for-pens-to-win-nhl-playoff-series

Penguins Sidney Crosby Returning For Game 2

The Penguins made the announcement Friday morning. Sid said he met with a doctor earlier in the week, and at that time the doctor wasn’t ready to clear him to play. The Penguins didn’t need Crosby’s help on Wednesday night, as they beat up on the Islanders 5-0. The Penguins, the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference, beat Evgeni Nabokov four times in the game’s first 22 minutes, including goals by Letang and Dupuis 32 seconds apart early in the second period to send Nabokov to the bench after he stopped just 11 shots. Crosby, who has been out of the lineup since March 30 with a broken jaw, has been skating in full gear. Crosby also had an attachment added to his helmet to help protect his jaw. Crosby was injured when a shot by Brooks Orpik deflected off of a New York Islanders’ player into his face. He lost several teeth in addition to the broken jaw. Despite missing 12 games, Crosby still finished tied for third in the NHL scoring race with 56 points and he has torched the Islanders throughout his career, scoring 20 goals and dishing out 55 assists against the Islanders, the most points has against any team. source: http://washington.cbslocal.com/2013/05/03/penguins-sidney-crosby-returning-for-game-2/
