NHL on NBCSN: Red Wings struggle to keep postseason streak alive, face Coyotes

, , Leave a comment

The last time the Red Wings missed the playoffs, George H.. W.. Bush was the President of the United States, there were 21 teams in the NHL, and Mark Messier, Patrick Roy, Wayne Gretzky, and Brett Hull were 20-somethings dominating the league.. That’s the streak at stake as we enter the final week of the regular season.. The Red Wings have just four games left starting with tonight’s contest against Phoenix.. None of the Red Wings want to be responsible for letting one of the longest postseason appearance streaks in the history of the NHL come to an end.. “If you’re Henrik Zetterberg , and it’s your first year as captain, you don’t want it on your watch,” Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said .. “If you’re Mike Babcock, in your eighth year of coaching, you don’t want it on your watch.” Despite that sentiment, Detroit has won just one of its last six games, although three of those losses were determined by shootouts.. The Red Wings’ recent slump has corresponded with the Columbus Blue Jackets’ surge.. Columbus earned a 4-3 victory over San Jose on Sunday, so the eighth place Blue Jackets now have a three-point lead over Detroit, but have played in two extra games.. In other words, the Red Wings’ fate is still in their own hands, but the pressure is certainly on. source: http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/22/nhl-on-nbcsn-red-wings-struggle-to-keep-postseason-streak-alive-vs-coyotes/

Phoenix Coyotes sale: Glendale seeks new arena manager as clock ticks

Several groups have expressed an interest, and those groups could put in bids as arena managers.. If efforts to purchased the team fail, the Coyotes could leave the Phoenix market this summer.. That would leave the arena without its anchor tenant and potentially hurt restaurants and bars at the neighboring Westgate Entertainment District unless a new user can fill the void.. Paperwork accompanying the request shows the city has lost at least $5 million on arena operations in each of the past three years.. The new RFP looks for arena managers with major professional sports or large facilities experience.. It also asks for bidders to put forward management fee proposals, as well as alternative compensation structures to the city and Beacon.. “Managers responding to this RFP must be prepared to undertake, in the most efficient manner possible, all aspects of arena management, marketing and operations of the arena,” the procurement documents from Beacon read.. The city and Needham, Mass.-based Beacon could hire a new manager for the $180 million, 17,800-seat arena as early as July 1.. The Glendale City Council hired Beacon in March to run the RFP.. The company is getting a $25,000 retainer and a $400 per hour fee from the city for the arena work.. The contract is slated to cost Glendale $100,000, according to city documents. source: http://aol.sportingnews.com/nhl/story/2013-04-23/phoenix-coyotes-sale-update-glendale-az-jobing-arena

Wings, Howard shut out Coyotes

VIEW PHOTOS .. Phoenix has been in the playoffs the previous three seasons, losing to Detroit in the first round in 2011 and 2010.. The Red Wings were skating hard and checking a lot – even Pavel Datsyuk had two big hits within the first 10 minutes of the game – in their quest to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time since 1990.. ”They understand what’s going on more than anybody,” Babcock said.. ”They make their living here and they got a lot of pride in wearing the sweater.” Detroit scored on its first shot when Franzen redirected a puck past Mike Smith into the game on a power play.. The Red Wings didn’t let a shot get to Howard for more than 6 minutes.. Meanwhile, they went 13-plus minutes without a shot of their own and needed Howard to make some key saves to keep the lead.. He stopped Doan’s shot on a power play midway through the first period and got his stick and pads on Radim Vrbata ‘s one-timer with 6 minutes left in the first period.. Even hot celebs love cool NHL games .. ”We had opportunities to score; we didn’t, they did,” Doan said.. ”That’s the story.” Soon after killing a penalty, the Red Wings scored another goal with an extra skater in the final minute of the first period. source: http://msn.foxsports.com/nhl/story/detroit-red-wings-beat-phoenix-coyotes-jimmy-howard-earns-shutout-042213
