Ryan Johansen scores the tiebreaking goal with 1:37 remaining for the Columbus Blue Jackets. (USATSI)

I just found a hole there.. It was nice to be in the middle of the ice, it’s a great shooting area.. I was just lucky to beat (Antti) Niemi on the shot.. I felt like it was good scoring chance right away.. This is the biggest goal I’ve scored in my career so far.. It’s a great feeling.” It was a wild swing of emotions in the third period, especially for Pavelski.. The Sharks rallied from 3-1 down to tie the game on his power-play goal with 5:03 remaining only to miss a chance to clinch the playoffs when they lost in regulation at home for just the second time this season.. “It was right there for us obviously,” Pavelski said.. “It’s tough.. You never want to make a play like that at the end.. You understand where you are in the game and you understand these things do happen once in a while.. It’s tough when they do, but we have to move on and get better from this and I have to try to execute better next time.” Marty Havlat and Andrew Desjardins also scored and Niemi made 18 saves in his 23rd straight start for the Sharks, who need one point to clinch their ninth straight playoff berth. source:

San Jose Sharks Need More Goals From Joe Thornton

It leads me to think about what needs to happen in the postseason for San Jose to make a deep run.. There has been a lot of talk about the play of Antti Niemi in goal and rightfully so with how he has led the Sharks back into playoff contention.. I think the biggest player to watch out for would be Joe Thornton going forward.. Thornton has 39 points in 45 games including 32 assists.. He is a player who moves the puck to his teammates so they can score instead of doing it himself.. I like that kind of player but I have to think that this team needs a few more goals from their captain.. Thornton has averaged nearly a point a game over his career and has more than double the number of assists to goals scored.. San Jose isn’t an offensive juggernaut though, being in the bottom ten for goals per game in the NHL this season.. San Jose is just two points behind the Los Angeles Kings for the No.. 4 seed in the Western Conference with just three games to go.. The two teams will face each other on Saturday night in the final game of the regular season. source:

Praise for Brian Burke from Leafs; Stefan Matteau quits team (Puck Headlines)

It’s a really good group of players that has come together.” [ QMI ] • If you’re wondering why Ryan White earned five games from the NHL, the words “knocked out cold” probably didn’t help his case.. [ ] • The Detroit Red Wings.. Devious.. [ Malik Report ] • Strange case from juniors, as Devils pick Stefan Matteau quits the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.. [ Buzzing The Net ] • Allan Muir on Matteau: “This isn’t an ender for him, but someone needs to call a come-to-Jesus meeting.. Whether it is his dad, his agent or the Devils, someone must step up and adjust his attitude.. Playing with an edge is one thing.. Playing with fire is another.. The Armada finally decided the risk wasn’t worth the reward.. Next it might be New Jersey that comes to that conclusion.” [ SI ] • Solid piece here on Antti Niemi of the San Jose Sharks: “Niemi was undrafted and it has taken plenty of time to earn the respect of many in the hockey community.. Even after winning a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks he still had his doubters.. San Jose decided to take a chance on him and have been rewarded with consistent play. source:–nhl.html

NHL: San Jose Sharks lose to Columbus Blue Jackets on late goal

But a turnover led to a late goal that gave the Columbus Blue Jackets a 4-3 victory at HP Pavilion, denying the Sharks the one point they needed to guarantee their ninth consecutive postseason appearance.. Less than four minutes before Joe Pavelski lost control of the puck in his own zone and Columbus center Ryan Johansen scored the game-winner, the Sharks forward had scored the power-play goal that drew the Sharks even after they began the final period two goals down.. “It’s a crucial moment in the game,” Pavelski said of his error.. “You want to be out there at that time.. There’s a lot of guys in San Jose Sharks’ Andrew Desjardins (10) scores a goal against Columbus Blue Jackets’ goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky (72) in the third period at HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., on Sunday, April 21, 2013.. (Nhat V.. Meyer/Bay Area News Group) ( Nhat V.. Meyer ) here who put a lot of work in throughout the game.. ….
