NHL on NBCSN: Kings, Sharks battle for home ice advantage

Well, it would probably help these two teams, given that they’re a combined 30-5-6 at home this season and just 16-22-5 on the road.. That’s what’s at stake tonight as the Kings currently hold the fourth seed, but have a mere one-point lead over the Sharks.. This is their second last game against each other and consequently one of their last opportunities to push down the other squad.. Naturally, given these teams’ disparity between their home and road records, the advantage would seem to be with San Jose tonight.. However, the Sharks are at the end of a three games in four days stretch that included a contest in Phoenix last night.. San Jose won that match, but fatigue has to be a concern against the rested Kings.. For the Sharks, perhaps their biggest challenge tonight will be containing Jeff Carter and Mike Richards .. When Carter’s hot, he’s one of the most dangerous scorers in the league and lately he has six goals in eight games.. Meanwhile, Richards is taking a six-game point streak into this contest.. Although he played last night, the Sharks might counter with goaltender Antti Niemi .. He earned a 35-save shutout against Phoenix on Monday and has traditionally been very good against the Kings in regular season games.. He has a 9-4-2 record, 2.39 GAA, and .922 save percentage in 16 career non-playoffs starts against Los Angeles. source: http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/16/nhl-on-nbcsn-kings-sharks-battle-for-home-ice-advantage/

San Jose Sharks beat Los Angeles Kings in shootout

While both teams skated hard at each other from the start, neither scored until Burns took over the ice as the second period neared its midpoint.. Over a 42-second span, he racked up a goal and an assist as the Sharks jumped out to a 2-0 lead.. First he intercepted a careless clearing attempt by Kings forward Dustin Penner, skated a few strides into the right faceoff circle and fired a 19-foot wrist shot that beat Quick at 8:48.. Later on the same shift, Los Angeles defenseman Robyn Regher gave the puck away behind his own net, Burns scooped it up and then found Galiardi cutting across the crease.. Galiardi didn’t miss at 9:30.. Back-to-back Sharks penalties that period — a tripping call on Galiardi, a cross-checking call against Jason Demers — helped Los Angeles get back in the game by giving the Kings a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:13.. The Sharks survived that, but before Demers could get back on the ice, Muzzin launched a shot from the blue line through traffic that beat a screened Sharks goalie Antti Niemi at 13:59.. And the Kings knotted it up at 2-2 when Niemi couldn’t get his glove on a loose puck in the crease and Brown poked it past him at 18:41.. Still, Niemi played another overall strong game, making 41 saves.. His biggest may have come in overtime when he fully extended his left leg to make a pad save on Kings forward Jeff Carter, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush.. Ultimately, the game was decided when Torres scored while Niemi stopped Jeff Carter, Anze Kopitar and Mike Richards.. Quick did stop shots by Logan Couture and Boyle. source: http://www.mercurynews.com/sharks/ci_23041832/san-jose-sharks-beat-los-angeles-kings-shootout

Kings-Sharks Preview

“A 4-0 win in a building we haven’t had a lot of success in lately, it was a good way to end it,” coach Todd McLellan said.. Niemi is 13-1-4 with a 1.75 goals-against average at home this season.. He’s also 4-1-0 with a 2.27 GAA in six starts at HP Pavilion against the Kings.. That includes a 4-3 victory March 14 in which Logan Couture had two goals and an assist.. The Kings evened the season series two days later with a 5-2 home victory behind two goals from Kyle Clifford .. Couture scored his 17th goal Monday to tie Patrick Marleau for the team lead.. He’s eagerly anticipating his club’s next game.. “We have a big game against LA …. and we’re looking forward to that one, so it’s good to get this one,” Couture said.. Marleau, meanwhile, has one goal in his last 10 games, although he has 14 points in his last 10 versus the Kings.. Los Angeles has not played since Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Anaheim. source: http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nhl/preview?gameId=400443113

Kings snap Blue Jackets’ streak, 2-1

Kings Coach Darryl Sutter will let Dustin Penner play through

.. till they meet again?. Still, with the playoffs looming, the best replacement for Greene was always going to be Greene, of course.. (Unfortunately, that won’t work with Mitchell, whose future remains murky.) Greene, who had back surgery to repair a herniated disc , played in his first game since Jan.. 19, and it was a measured success.. The Kings beat the Blue Jackets , 2-1, on Thursday night at Staples Center , ending the five-game winning streak by Columbus.. They also cling to the valuable fourth spot in the Western Conference , which means home ice in the opening round of the playoffs.. “These aren’t playoff games, but they are what you expect at the end of the season like this,” said Kings goalie Jonathan Quick , who won his 16th game of the season and had 20 saves.. “They’re hard-fought games, one-goal games.. That’s how it usually is toward the end of the year like this.. “They’re fighting for a playoff spot. source: http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-kings-blue-jackets-20130419,0,7873560.story
