”We came out strong, and Nabby made great saves, as usual,” Moulson said.. ”We are feeling very good about ourselves with five games left.” Dmitry Kulikov and Marcel Goc had goals for the Panthers (13-23-6), who own the NHL’s worst record.. The Islanders (22-16-5) came out flying, continuing the brisk pace they established against the Rangers.. They outshot the Panthers 15-8 in the first period and took a 3-0 lead as the near-capacity crowd chanted, ”Let’s Go Islanders” and ”We Want Playoffs.” Moulson opened the scoring at 8:01, tipping in Thomas Hickey ‘s point shot for his 14th goal of the season.. Streit made it 2-0 during a 5-on-3 power play at 13:59, ripping a shot past goalie Jacob Markstrom for his sixth of the season.. ”The atmosphere at the Coliseum reminded me of games in Switzerland,” said Streit, whose hometown team SC Bern – for which he and Islanders leading scorer John Tavares played during this season’s NHL lockout – won the Swiss elite league championship on Tuesday.. ”It’s really great for us to be in this position.. We just have to keep it going.” Grabner increased the lead with his 14th goal, another power-play tally at 16:47 as Panthers defenseman Erik Gudbranson served a four-minute, high-sticking penalty.. ”Timely goals are big,” Grabner said.. ”I’m glad I was able to get two of them.” Kulikov put the Panthers on the board when his slap shot on the power play eluded Nabokov at 18:12 of the first. source:

New York Islanders at Winnipeg Jets

New York is on a 7-0-2 run and 10-1-2 in its past 13 games, but it knows this isn’t the time to celebrate.. “We’ve still got 12 periods of hockey left and on the road against some good quality teams,” said center John Tavares, who scored twice and set up a Brad Boyes’ goal that started a rally from a 2-0 deficit in the first period.. The Jets (23-19-2) were just outside the top eight in the East heading into Friday’s action – three points behind the Islanders – but if they can extend their longest winning streak since relocating from Atlanta prior to last season, and Washington doesn’t pick up a point in Montreal on Saturday night, they will tie the Capitals atop the Southeast Division with 50 points.. Winnipeg is in that position, and moving closer to the franchise’s second postseason appearance, after Dustin Byfuglien scored in overtime to give the Jets a 4-3 victory over Carolina on Thursday.. The Capitals lost 3-1 at Ottawa that night.. “The next two points are huge for us and we’ve just got to take it a game at a time,” said defenseman Zach Bogosian, who has a goal and five assists in the last three games.. “We can’t worry about other teams or what streaks we have going on.” Jets captain Andrew Ladd has four goals and eight assists during a career high-tying six-game point streak, while teammates Blake Wheeler and Bryan Little are riding five-game streaks.. Extending those could be a challenge if Evgeni Nabokov is in net, as the veteran is 9-1-2 with a 1.58 goals-against average in his last 12 starts.. His five-start winning streak against the Jets franchise ended with a 5-4 overtime loss in Winnipeg on Jan.. 27 when Evander Kane’s goal snapped the Jets’ three-game losing streak in this series.. With Kevin Poulin in net, the Islanders improved to 4-0-1 in their last five between these clubs with a 5-2 home victory April 2.. Tavares, third in the NHL with 26 goals, has scored in both matchups this season and set up three goals. source:

New York 0, Winnipeg 0

They have won five straight and only sit two points behind the Washington Capitals for first place in the Southeast Division.. The Caps also have four games left in the regular season and visit the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night.. Looking to end a five-year playoff drought, the Islanders bested the hosting Toronto Maple Leafs 5-3 on Thursday as John Tavares continued his MVP-like season.. The forward scored twice and added an assist as he ranks third in the NHL with 26 goals.. Brad Boyes added a goal and two assists, while Matt Moulson and Frans Nielsen also scored.. Evgeni Nabokov made 18 saves to help New York extend its longest point streak since going 9-0-1 with a tie to open the 2001-02 season.. “When your forwards are making good decisions and winning all the battles, it makes it a lot easier for us,” said New York defenseman Andrew MacDonald, part of a defense that has not allowed more than three goals in 13 straight games.. New York won the opener of a season-ending five-game road trip that still includes trips to Carolina, Philadelphia and Buffalo.. The Jets, meanwhile, have not reached the playoffs since the franchise’s lone appearance in 2007.. However, their five-game winning streak is the longest for the club since the Thrashers won six straight from Nov.. 19-30, 2010. source:

Evgeni Nabokov Heating Up At The Perfect Time For New York Islanders

They’re going to be a very dangerous team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.. If they can get solid play between the pipes, they’ll be that much more dangerous heading into the postseason.. Despite a noted track record of failure over the course of his career, Evgeni Nabokov is flying high right now as the starter for the Isles.. Can he carry that success into the postseason?. Over the past month or so, Nabokov has been downright excellent in net for the Islanders.. His recent performance is a bit overshadowed by the fact that his overall numbers on the season aren’t too impressive.. He has a .910 save percentage and 2.50 goals-against average for the year.. Since the middle of March, though, after he was pulled from a start after allowing five goals on 17 shots, Nabokov has turned his game on.. He’s made 16 starts since that point, allowing more than two goals just four times.. In that span, he’s posted two shutouts and has allowed just one goal five times. source:
