He then blacked out and woke up in an ambulance.. The Aftermath Once in the hands of capable medical professionals, the injuries, though serious, extensive and gruesome, were not life-threatening for Blanchard.. But, he did wonder about his career.. “I remember sitting on the bed at the hospital.. I was so shocked, so nervous wondering what would happen with my career,” he said.. “But at that moment, I was praying a lot, and I just wanted to heal, and then after that I’d look at the future.” Blanchard remained hospitalized for about a month.. The laceration in his side was left open for weeks in order to avoid enclosing an infection under the skin.. “It was so gross,” Blanchard said.. “I had to put gauze inside like twice a day.. It was the most painful thing ever.” Once healed, Blanchard faced a steep uphill climb to sustain his hopes of playing in the NHL.. That was his dream, and he wasn’t going to let an accident derail it. source:

4-3 OT loss to Jets knocks Hurricanes out of playoffs

“We played pretty good game, just couldn’t get the finish we wanted,” Ruutu said.. “In the third period I thought we were pushing.. We had a couple of opportunities (late in regulation).. Maybe next time.” Defensemen Zach Bogosian and Paul Postma scored goals as the Jets (23-19-2) led 1-0 after the opening period and moved ahead 2-0 in the second.. Bogosian also assisted on Postma’s power-play score.. Blake Wheeler then roared down ice and scored in the third period as Winnipeg’s top line continued to pile up points and spearhead the Jets.. Bogosian had the only goal — and provided about the only excitement — in a lackluster first period.. On a rush into the Canes zone, he thrust out his stick to poke the puck wide and past Peters.. “It’s a tough building to play in and you have to be really ready, work hard, skate hard, hit hard,” Ruutu said.. “They were a little bit better in the first period but then I thought we were pretty good.” Ruutu missed much of the season as he recovered from hip surgery and did not have a goal in his first 11 games.. But the winger took a pass in the slot from Faulk and ripped a shot past Pavelec with 9 minutes, 22 seconds left in the second period. source:

Hurricanes fall short in fight-riddled game with Senators

For the Hurricanes, not much good came from the game against the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Place as the Senators won, 3-2.. The Canes (17-23-2) were hoping to build on a their 4-2 win Saturday against the Boston Bruins that ended a seven-game losing streak.. But the Sens’ Craig Anderson was too good in net and the Sens too good on home ice, where they are 14-3-3 this season.. Mika Zibanejad scored in the first period, and Milan Michalek and Chris Neil in the second for the Sens (22-14-6), who never trailed.. Defensman Justin Faulk scored for the Canes in the second period after some hard work in the Sens’ zone.. Eric Staal punched the puck past Anderson with 3:30 left in regulation.. Skinner, who suffered a concussion earlier this season, was knocked out of the game with 6:49 left in the first period after an open-ice hit from Sens defenseman Jared Cowen.. The hit came near center ice as Cowen, a big guy at 6-5 and 230 pounds, appeared to target the head of Skinner, who’s listed at 5-11 and 200.. No penalty was called on Cowen, who was playing his first game of the season after a hip injury in October, playing for Binghamton in the AHL during the NHL lockout.. He did receive a fighting major after the Canes’ Chad LaRose dropped the gloves and went after him with Skinner down on the ice. source:

Senators 3, Hurricanes 2

”I’m just trying to get back in game shape.. So far it’s going good and hopefully it will keep going that way,” said Michalek, who fought Marc-Andre Bergeron late in the game.. ”I try not to think about it during the game and just try to play my game.. If something happens it happens but I can’t be cautious because that would probably be worse for me.. I’ve been injured a lot and had some bad luck.. Hopefully it’s turning.” The lead was back to one however, exactly 4 minutes later as Anderson got some, but not enough, of Faulk’s shot from the slot.. After some pressure from the Hurricanes, the Senators broke out on a 2-on-1 that ended with Neil redirecting a pass from Guillaume Latendresse past Peters at the edge of the Carolina crease with 2:48 left in the second.. Staal scored a power-play goal with 3 1/2 minutes left in the third, but that was as close as the Hurricanes got.. ”As always it’s back to the drawing board after a win or a loss,” Westgarth said.. ”You have to get ready for that next game immediately and take what you can from mistakes that were made, learn from it and move on and be ready for that next opponent.” NOTES: Senators C Peter Regin celebrated his 27th birthday. source:

Carolina Hurricanes Mathematically Eliminated From Playoffs

With such great off-season moves, it seemed like the Hurricanes were on their way to another playoff run until injuries and slumps got in the way.. Jim Rutherford made sure to be aggressive in the off-season by making a huge trade for Jordan Staal.. This added the perfect second line center, which the team has missed in years past.. He then managed to grab Alexander Semin from free agency.. Semin would be a skilled forward to play with captain Eric Staal on the first line.. Earlier in the season, the Canes looked like a top tier team and led the Southeast division by a healthy margin.. This all went downhill when starting goalie Cam Ward went down with injury.. Ward was accidently run into by his own defenseman and hasn’t played since with a MCL sprain.. While he started off slow, it was obvious Ward was a much better goalie then Dan Ellis and Justin Peters.. The Hurricanes also suffered without the depth scoring they needed. Jussi Jokinen was expected to lead a valuable third scoring line but didn’t put up the points they needed.. He was later traded to the  Pittsburgh Penguins  to unload his large contract. Chad LaRose also had trouble provided the same depth scoring he had before.. When it didn’t seem like anything worse could happen, the Hurricanes lost top defensemen Justin Faulk and Joni Pitkanen to injury. source:
