New York Islanders Have A Chance To Earn Playoff Spot For First Time In Six Years

Casey Cizikas Flyers Islanders

With eight games remaining, the Islanders offense has come alive, averaging nearly four goals per game in their last four wins.. Evgeni Nabokov has been stellar in goal, allowing two goals or fewer in each of the Islanders last five outings.. The Islanders have thrived this season thanks to a high-scoring offense that has helped them over come some defensive shortcomings, but as of late their defense has stepped up as well.. Their next two games will be critical for their playoff hopes, as they face the Boston Bruins on Thursday and the New York Rangers on Saturday.. The Islanders currently hold a two point lead over the Rangers in the standings, and a win on Saturday would go a long way toward helping secure a playoff spot.. John Tavares and Matt Moulson each scored a goal in the win over the Flyers, as the Islanders top line continues to show it is one of the best in the league.. Michael Grabner kept a hot streak going with his 13th goal of the season and second in the last two games.. As has been the case often this season, the Islanders also got a goal from a depth player as Casey Cizikas’ sixth goal of the season (empty net) preserved the win.. The Islanders have won four straight games at home and have won seven of their last nine games.. They are trying to reach the playoffs for the first time since 2007.. New York 4, Philadelphia 1

“We played like we wanted it more.. I think that’s why we got the two points,” Nabokov said.. “Everything is positive right now, but you can’t get carried away because you know that it’s such a fight for the playoffs with eight games left.. You can find yourself very quickly the other way.. You just want to keep the focus and intensity at the same level, win or lose.” Jakub Voracek’s first-period strike was the sole offense for the Flyers, who have lost two in a row after winning four straight.. Steve Mason’s first Philadelphia start didn’t go as planned, despite the former Columbus netminder stopping 28 pucks.. “It’s frustrating,” Flyers forward Scott Hartnell said.. “You can’t just expect to score one goal and win a game.. You got to continue to push it.. Mason played great for us.. He was really solid back there.” Bad luck struck the visitors with 1:37 left in regulation. source:

Isles News Bits: Nabby love, Islanders love, oh the attention

The Daily News uses an AP report, as did the Times.. (Come on, Times.. Not even a bemused “As Future Beckons in Brooklyn, Team Invokes the Past” brief?) More: NY Hockey Journal on last night, with a view from the press box in pictures | Eyes on Isles recaps, as does IPB | Flyers fans at BSH know it’s over .. Elsewhere: Down in Bridgeport, they’re not dead yet but last night did not go well .. The Connecticut Post also profiles debutant Scott Mayfield .. The ones who walk away: It’s just uuuuuugly in Colorado , which makes me wonder if ol’ PAP might regret his choice.. No doubt Agent Walsh is digging the commission.. Finally, we should pay attention to the rest of the league, too.. Elliotte Friedman’s 30 Thoughts is a good jumping off point for that, including Olympics insurance talk and #10: The more you hear about trade deadline day, the more you realize the poker game that the Toronto Maple Leafs and Canucks played with each other.. Toronto thought it was getting Miikka Kiprusoff from Calgary.. When he changed his mind, Vancouver decided to test the waters, but the Leafs waited until an hour before the deadline to engage.. So imagine what each side is thinking here. source:

Grabner’s Islanders take stronger hold on playoff place with Flyers win

Michael Grabner of the New York Islanders

Michael Grabner scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and Evgeni Nabokov made 26 saves as the Islanders won for the seventh time in nine games and moved two points ahead of the New York Rangers into seventh place in the Eastern Conference.. Philadelphia (17-19-3) is 12th in the East, five points behind the Rangers and the postseason cutoff.. The Islanders, who won just two of their first 11 home games this season, have four consecutive wins at Nassau Coliseum.. The Pittsburgh Penguins clinched the Atlantic Division title by beating the free-falling Carolina Hurricanes 5-3.. Pittsburgh’s Beau Bennett and Evgeni Malkin scored 13 seconds apart in the third period, and Brenden Morrow scored his first goal with the Penguins.. Robert Bortuzzo also scored and Pascal Dupuis had an empty-netter and two assists.. Marc-Andre Fleury made 25 saves for Penguins, who were without a handful of regulars including captain Sidney Crosby.. Sergei Bobrovsky earned his fourth NHL shutout and newcomer Marian Gaborik had a goal and an assist to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets over the San Jose Sharks 4-0.. Matt Calvert, James Wisniewski and Ryan Johansen also scored for the Blue Jackets, who had lost their previous two games.. Alex Ovechkin scored his 26th goal and Jack Hillen netted his first at the Washington Capitals stretched their winning run to five games by beating the Montreal Canadiens 3-2.. Eric Fehr also scored for the Southeast Division-leading Capitals.. The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 as Steven Stamkos scored his 26th goal of the season in the third period. source:
